This position reports to the Engineering Manager and will be a key member in the BGM Engineering Team to ensure that targets for cost control, safe working, employee development, environmental management and governance are achieved.
KEY RESULT AREAS/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Ensure deployment of key initiatives and communication of relevant messages to all fixed plant maintenance crews.
• Effectively promote, deploy, and comply with all Safety & Health and Environmental policies, standards, procedures and regulations across Light Vehicles and Transport equipment and machinery maintenance.
• Spend significant time in the field – “visible felt leadership” – interacting with the workforce, ~20-30% of working time.
• Provide employees with a safe and healthy work environment by ensuring provision of safe systems of work; safe work procedures; adequate training and instruction; competent supervision; and safe plant and equipment.
• Develop systems and foster the required collaboration to ensure the department meets monthly targets.
• Safety performance of the Light Vehicle and Transport Section.
• Ensures that Zero-Based-Budgeting principles are applied in setting the annual departmental budget.
• Light Vehicle and Transport Section cost performance, including monthly forecast and variance analysis reporting to Engineering Manager.
• Report Light Vehicle and Transport downtime related issues on a monthly and year-to-date basis
• Ensure ongoing downtime analysis and related defect elimination and maintenance strategy adjustment activities.
• Effective and efficient application of maintenance resources as measured by schedule compliance, PM compliance, level of planned vs. unplanned work and the ongoing management of backlog.
• Ensure departmental performance is regularly reported to all crews through undertaking formal end-of-month performance presentations on Safety, Cost, Availability, and Utilization, including key messages.
• Review hazard ID and incident reports and provide follow-up as appropriate.
• Participate in incident investigations (injury, significant near-miss and equipment damage) as required ensure that corrective actions are effectively implemented and tracked.
• Support the development and ongoing optimization of maintenance strategies for the critical equipment within the light vehicle and transport section.
• Ensure that all light vehicle and transport maintenance activities are planned and scheduled effectively utilizing business
• Complete performance evaluation reviews for direct reports and manage their career development.
PROFESSIONAL AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS/ATTRIBUTES
Education Requirements:
• Qualification in (Qualified Tradesman) in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution.
• A NHD (National Higher Diploma) in Engineering will be an added advantage
• Management / Leadership qualification will be an added advantage (SDP Certification)
Experience Requirements:
• Detailed knowledge of managing an engineering department/section on a large mine, including supervisory, technical, operational, financial and safety knowledge
• Minimum of 5-10 years relevant work experience
• Detailed mining experience, with special reference to Light Vehicles and Bus Transportation. Significant experience in dealing with all aspects of the engineering function from inbound to outbound logistics
• Significant experience in the financial aspects of engineering such as cost control budgeting and return on investment
• Sound interpersonal and management skills with the ability to lead and motivate a team of employees to achieve mining business targets
