The American University of Sharjah (AUS) invites applications for the position of Director of the Academic Achievement Center. The University was founded in 1997 as a comprehensive, independent, non-profit coeducational university based on American models of higher education. AUS is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, (Philadelphia, PA), licensed in the United States by the Department of Education of the State of Delaware and by the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (UAE MOHESR). All academic programs are accredited by the UAE MOHESR, the undergraduate engineering and computer science majors by ABET, the undergraduate business majors by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), and the Bachelor of Architecture program has become first program outside of North America to be formally granted a three-year term of initial accreditation by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).
The approximately 5,500 students are enrolled in 25 undergraduate majors and 13 master’s degree programs, represent over 80 nationalities, and are nearly equally divided among males and females (54% and 46%, respectively). They are served by over 350 full-time faculty and nearly 500 staff.
The 316-acre campus is a spectacular setting of imposing architecture and beautiful landscaping located adjacent to Sharjah International Airport, and 30 minutes from Dubai International Airport. The United Arab Emirates boasts a thriving economy, high standard of living, and openness to people of different cultures.
The Academic Achievement Center currently includes four full-time advisors The Director will report directly to the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs and Instruction and will work closely with Associate Deans and the Office of the Registrar.

Duties of the Position Include:
- Developing mechanisms to evaluate and improve academic advising procedures across campus;
- Administering campus-wide and/or academic unit assessment measures;
- Overseeing programs to identify, advise and monitor the progress of at-risk students;
- Supervising support programs for students on academic probation;
- Developing, structuring, and assessing services for students with physical challenges and learning difficulties, including documentation verification, development of accommodation plans, and collaboration with relevant academic and administrative units.
- Ensuring compliance with UAE national legislation concerning individuals with special needs and adherence to international best practices;
- Coordinating and supervising events to recognize student success, including an annual honors convocation;
- Recruiting, hiring, supervising, and training staff and student assistants;
- Monitoring and managing the budget for the Academic Achievement Center;
- Developing and maintaining an effective website for communicating with students, faculty, and parents; and
- Designing a comprehensive assessment program to ensure periodic evaluation and constant improvement of Academic Achievement Center programs and services.
Preferred Educational Qualifications:
- A doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, psychology, education, or related field.
Required Professional Qualifications:
- Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible higher education experience in areas related to student support services;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills;
- Ability to prioritize, make decisions, solve problems, initiate tasks, and meet deadlines;
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and experience in a diverse and dynamic multicultural environment;
- Management experience that includes staff development and budgetary oversight responsibilities;
- Knowledge of current research related to student success, as well as demonstrated understanding of the development and assessment of learning outcomes;
- Demonstrated knowledge of factors affecting student success in higher education, including those affecting students with physical challenges;
- Ability to teach in one or more subject areas in an academic department; and
- Affiliation with the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).
