Plan is seeking a ‘advocacy and policy’ trainee to join its Brussels-based EU Office for six months starting 15 August 2011. S/he should be dynamic, a dedicated team player and fluent in English. In addition, the candidate for each position should have a clear understanding of the EU development policy and child rights.

JOB CONTEXT:
The ‘Advocacy and Policy Trainee’ will contribute to presenting Plan’s programmes and approaches to relevant EU institutions, and in supporting Plan Europe members to access EU funding.
Principle Areas of Responsibility
- Support the Senior Advocacy Manager in the advocacy and policy work of our office;
- Support Plan Europe’s advocacy work regarding Plan’s global campaigns.
- Support the EU Policy Manager in the internal coordination work around EC funding.
- Contribute to the implementation of the grants strategy of the Plan EU Office;
General Description of Tasks
Under the supervision of and in collaboration with the Senior Advocacy Manager to:
- Follow different policy dossiers and relevant working groups of CONCORD;
- Support the thematic and practical organization of the ‘Girls Week’ in the European Parliament;
- Provide support to the organisation of the Plan Europe Board meeting;
- Write articles for the monthly Plan EU internal newsletters;
- Check on a daily basis for any new EC calls for proposals;
- Provide support to the organisation of Plan’s Annual EC grants meeting;
- Inform Plan’s Country Offices about upcoming funding opportunities;
- Assist in the follow-up of information requested to/from Plan’s Country and National Offices regarding EC funding issues;
- Contribute to the monthly EC grants and advocacy updates;
- Support Plan staff when visiting the Brussels office for EC grants and advocacy reasons;
- Maintain Plan’s Intranet updated;
- Conduct research on particular topic areas;
The successful candidates will be/have:
- A university degree or equivalent experience in political science, international development, communication or any other specific field relevant to Plan’s work;
- A good understanding of the functioning of the European Union and development policy;
- A very good command of both written and spoken English. A good knowledge of French is an advantage. Additional European languages are considered an asset;
- Have a valid working permit for Belgium;
- Team spirit and willingness to work in a multicultural team;
- Good organisational skills, with the ability to work to a high standard, manage stress while prioritising multiple tasks and meeting deadlines;
- Fully computer literate; skilled and confident user of office applications such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail and calendar applications.
