CHAMPION Project (Channeling Men’s Positive Involvement in a National HIV/AIDS Response) Project which seeks to increase positive male involvement in HIV and reproductive health is funded by USAID and led by EngenderHealth. The project is implemented in ten regions throughout Tanzania, with the main office located in Dar es Salaam. EngenderHealth is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill in the position of Accountant for its CHAMPION Project based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. This position is open to Tanzania national candidates only.
Scope of Position
Reporting to the Finance and Grants Manager, the accountant has overall responsibility for managing the data entry of the accounting and finance transactions and assisting with the preparation of financial reports as directed. The accountant maintains the office accounting and financial files and undertakes the day to day activities including cheque writing, reporting and banking. The position calls for discretion, attention to detail, and independent decision-making regarding the recording of financial transaction.
Specific Responsibilities
§ Assist in the generation of monthly financial reports for the CHAMPION project.
§ Working with the Finance & Grants Manager, compile the monthly financial field reports for consolidation in the project monthly report.
§ Ensure all financial documents are properly filed, including payment vouchers and receipts.
§ Assist Finance & Grants Manager to prepare monthly payroll and payroll returns to respective authorities, Tanzania Revenue Authority and Social Security returns.
§ Review all invoices and statement of accounts and reconcile on a regular basis debtor, staff and creditor accounts against organizational records
§ Assist with the preparations for internal and external audits by preparing relevant schedules
§ Supervise Accounts Assistant to ensure that those duties are performed effectively
§ Review payments vouchers and documentation prepared by Accounts Assistant are accurate, properly coded and are supported by the proper documentation
§ Work closely with bankers as the bank cashier by handing all cashed cheques for office use, collecting interim bank statements and depositing funds to the bank account.
§ Manage bank account cash flows using accounting software, on a regular basis.
§ Manage the accounting software by ensuring that payments and receipts are posted on a regular basis and that the integrity of the accounting database is maintained.
§ Ensure that staff account for their advances properly and promptly and help in the reconciliation of the staff advances.
§ Ensure that accounting documents and systems are properly filed and safely maintained
§ Assist Finance and Grant Manager in the financial management of sub grantees.
§ Keep track of all tax exemption requests lodged with TRA
§ Any other relevant duties that might be assigned from time to time.
Qualifications
§ University degree in accounting or Advanced Diploma in Accounting or equivalent
§ Minimum of two years relevant work experience in the field of accounting/finance/ auditing.
§ Experience in managing bank operations as an organizational bank cashier
§ Experience in working and managing accounting software, e.g. QuickBooks, SUN, Tally
§ Ability to handle imprest/ cash advance operations and reconciliations.
§ Conversant with regulatory requirements e.g. PAYE, NSSF, PPF, and VAT
§ Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills
§ The capacity to be discrete, honest and disciplined in the management of day to day activities
§ A personal and professional commitment to gender equality
§ Experience in and understanding of audit would be an added advantage.
