In November 2010 African Parks (AP) signed a partnership agreement with the Ministry of Sustainable Development of the Republic of Congo for the management and financing of the OKNP National Park. Management of the park will be the responsibility of a new legal entity, the “OKNP Foundation” (OKF), which has a board of directors made up of representatives from AP, RAPAC (a key donor), the Government, Leadership Conservation for Africa, and local communities. The management agreement runs for an initial term of 25 years, with an option to renew. Overall, it is envisaged that OKF will have full, delegated authority to manage OKNP.
OKNP covers an area of 1,365,000 hectares and is situated within the heart of the rainforest of the Congo basin. The outstanding conservation values of OKNP include the presence of more than 100 saline clearings, one of the largest populations of lowland gorillas and forest elephants in Central Africa, and possibly one of the last refuges of lion in the forest massif of Central Africa.
The long-term vision for OKNP is a follows:
“To restore, develop and manage OKNP National Park as a functioning forest and savannah ecosystem, through proper protection from poaching, sound conservation practices and tourism & other revenue development - thereby creating additional economic benefit

Job Description
Objectives and goals for the Conservation Manager
- Execution and management of the OKNP business plan
- Manage all conservation related efforts of the OKNP
- Ensure links and good relationships between OKNP, the Government and other NGO’s
- Ensure African Parks ethics and operational procedures
Job overview
The position is located at the OKNP headquarters.
It is fundamental to implement OKNP management plan.
A Conservation Manager is needed to complete the following tasks:
- Conception and management of conservation and sustainable use of natural resources projects and programs
- Administration and management of protected areas and other natural spaces
- Implementing a management strategy for the eco-development zone
- Implementing a research protocol and managing all research in the park
- Implementing and managing a monitoring program to asses game movements, numbers and outbreak of diseases within the park
- Implementing and managing a habituation program to create a product for future tourism development
Experience, skills and qualifications required
- The ideal candidate must have a strong academic background including a minimum academic qualification Bac + 6 in Wildlife biology or Protected Area Management
- The candidate must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in conservation at National and International level, and a proven ability to manage teams
- Ensuring the links between OKNP and the Government / NGO, the candidate must have outstanding communication skills, and a good knowledge of Central African policies, legislations and institutions related to wildlife/forest management
- Being fluent both in French and English is essential for this position.
