The Aegis Trust is a leading genocide prevention NGO with operations in the UK, US and Rwanda. Founded in July 2000, The Aegis Trust works closely with its two sister organisations, The Holocaust Centre, the first dedicated Holocaust museum in the UK, and Aegis Communities, a UK-focused community outreach program, to bring the lessons of the Holocaust and other genocides to communities in the UK and beyond. Aegis ultimately works to prevent of future genocide and crimes against humanity.
Core activities include Policy and Campaigning, which has recently secured major legislative changes on war crimes legislation in the UK; International Justice, which tracks suspected war criminals throughout the world, and provides development training to judiciaries in post-conflict areas; Aegis Rwanda, which includes the operation of the Kigali Genocide Memorial, associated preventative education programs, the National Genocide Archive of Rwanda, and a survivor support program; and Aegis Students, which exists to inspire and equip young people to prevent genocide and crimes against humanity.
The Trust is looking to recruit an Advocacy Coordinator, reporting to the Operations Manager, to support the Campaigns and Policy Programme. This is a varied role including research, media/communications, parliamentary liaison and operational support.
Job summary
Reports to: Operations Manager.
Work Pattern: Full time.
Salary: £22 – 25,000 depending on experience
Job purpose
To support the political, campaigning and advocacy work of The Aegis Trust including research and briefings, media and communications, event organisation and parliamentary liaison. Contract length
Key Responsibilities
Research
Provide political briefings and research on request. Keep updated on relevant policy issues. Fact-check and reference advocacy materials.
Media and Communications
Support Head of Media to liaise with the media: pitch stories, coordinate interviews, write and distribute press releases. Write news articles, supporter emails and web copy. Ensure all staff members are informed about the Campaigns and Policy Programme’s work.
Parliamentary liaison
Provide the secretariat to the All Party Parliamentary Group for the Prevention of Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity. Liaise with MPs and peers on relevant legislation, events and campaigns. Monitor Parliamentary developments.
Operational support
Event organisation; providing logistical support for UK and overseas travel. Act as personal assistant to The Aegis Trust’s Special Representative.
Skills and characteristics of the successful candidate
Required
- Degree in relevant subject e.g. international relations, politics, development;
- Strong understanding of UK policy context;
- At least two years’ professional experience in campaigns/advocacy, communications or parliamentary role;
- Experience liaising with the media;
- Demonstrable experience undertaking research on relevant subjects e.g. conflict, African politics, UK political scene;
- High-level verbal and written communications skills;
- Enthusiastic and flexible;
- A commitment to the work and values of The Aegis Trust.
Preferable
- Masters degree in a relevant subject;
- Experience working in Parliament;
- Work experience in Sub-Saharan Africa;
- An existing network of media and NGO contacts.
