World Cancer Research Fund International is here to change the way the world looks at cancer. We play a leading role in directing and supporting the research and policy activities of the WCRF global network, which is dedicated to the prevention of cancer through healthy food, nutrition, physical activity and weight management.
Working with researchers, health professionals, policy-makers and other health organisations throughout the world, we provide people with the information they need to make choices to reduce their risk of cancer.
In recent months the policy and advocacy side to our work has been developing and we are now seeking a dynamic and experienced Head of Policy and Public Affairs to help drive forward this important aspect of our work. Working with internal and external stakeholders, including influential institutions, non-governmental organisations and the media, you will create and capitalise on opportunities to promote the value of evidencebased cancer prevention research and policy to governments and other decision-makers in the UK and globally.
Description
The successful candidate will have extensive experience of working in health policy, ideally in an area related to cancer prevention, with a broad understanding of public health and international policy setting. An excellent grasp and knowledge of the workings of key institutions, including the UN system, particularly the World Health Organization and other relevant agencies and bodies such as the European Union, is essential.
You will be a strong communicator who is able to work collaboratively with our WCRF global network colleagues.
As a lead spokesperson on policy and public affairs issues, you will have the knowledge, skills and experience required to make an immense difference to people’s lives.

Relevant Experience
- Extensive experience of working in health policy, or in a public-facing role working directly with policy-makers and politicians at the national or international level;
- Demonstrable experience of influencing change at an international and UK level;
- Proven experience of leading and managing a team (including setting objectives, motivating staff, perfomance management) and strong team-building skills
Specific Skills & Knowledge
- Comprehensive knowledge of the complex policy areas and key issues relating to cancer prevention is desirable;
- Knowledge of the workings of key institutions, international policy settings and an understanding of areas of emerging priority for European cancer organisations around law and cancer;
- In-depth understanding of working with international and UK political structures and processes relating to the complex areas of food, nutrition, agriculture,
- physical activity, obesity and cancer/NCDs in a government agency, multilateral institution, think tank or NGO;
- Solid understanding of an evidence-based approach to policy development and mimplementation.

- Ability to convey complex issues compellingly and sensitively, and to manage complex discussions insightfully, to win support;
- Ability to drive self and others to achieve political change, using persistence, focus, challenge and leadership to win results for cancer prevention;
- Ability to bring a range of external perspectives to internal situations, influence other organisations to WCRF’s advantage and promote WCRF’s aims creatively;
- Ability to make good judgements and effectively represent WCRF to external audiences including political decision-makers and the media;
- Ability to develop good working relationships with other NGOs, policy-makers, other stakeholders and the ability to learn approaches from other organisations.
Education
- Postgraduate qualification in health policy, international relations, public health or a related discipline.
