This position will play an important role in the Robin Hood Tax campaign. With significant progress towards achieving taxation on financial transactions in Europe and recent backing from Bill Gates, we are looking for fast-paced, rapid response policy and advocacy for meetings at the highest levels of the Bank of England and FSA, and with politicians and officials. Stamp Out Poverty is a founding member of the Robin Hood Tax campaign (www.stampoutpoverty.org)
Key objectives:
• To develop campaign policy regarding further taxation of the financial sector, focusing on the introduction of a Financial Transactions Tax (FTT)
• To engage in high-level advocacy with key stakeholders in government, the financial sector and other NGOs
Specific responsibilities:
The post holder will be expected to:
• Develop a command of the academic literature surrounding the subject of FTTs and keep on top of new literature in this specialist field
• Carry out economic analysis, identifying the costs and benefits of different designs of financial taxes
• Think strategically – apply power analysis to assess the most effective ways to influence decision-makers, identifying key opportunities and threats.
• Develop and play a part in the delivery of strategies to influence political targets and key stakeholders
• Write concise briefings and political updates on a regular basis describing the political situation of the campaign for both internal and external use
• Write concise and non-technical briefings to inform and influence key opinion formers, parliamentarians and other senior figures.
• Brief campaign representatives prior to media interviews on best reactive lines
• Work closely with communications advisors on developing key communications products
• Hold and maintain key relationships with academics, special advisors and politicians
• Speak authoritatively and convincingly in public settings to technical and non-technical audiences
Person Specification
Applicants for this post should demonstrate how they meet each of the following criteria in their written application. The successful applicant will need:
Essential
• An undergraduate degree in economics (including a financial or mathematical component) at 2:1 level or above
• Experience of carrying out economic analysis
• Experience of quickly synthesising large amounts of information (including financial data) into concise and non-technical briefings for key opinion formers, parliamentarians and other senior figures.
• Experience of writing both persuasively and analytically
• Experience of thinking and working strategically – assessing the political landscape, identifying key opportunities and threats. The ability to assess the strengths and weaknesses of different advocacy strategies
• Experience of working in an advocacy context, either in government, the private sector or civil society Experience of learning quickly and adapting to a fast-moving political landscape
• Experience of briefing media targets
• Experience of speaking authoritatively and convincingly in a public setting to technical and non-technical audiences
Desirable
• A postgraduate degree in economics or a related discipline
• Experience of policy development, and developing political strategies
• Experience of developing and maintaining key relationships with academics, special advisors and politicians
• Experience of working under pressure with media officers or direct with the media, producing for example media briefs
• Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team including a mix of technical skills
• Experience of working in coalition or partnership with other organisations
• Experience of managing the time of a research intern, if required
