(Position is based in the town of Fungurume, approx. 180km west of the Katanga capitol of Lubumbashi. Travel to Lubumbashi and Kinshasa as needed.)
Area of Focus
TFM Communications Department is responsible for developing and implementing the Company's and TFM's internal and external communications programs. The department manages DRC media, public relations activities in regards to community events and is responsible for developing materials to communicate the company's key messages to employees and for external audiences. TFM holds a prominent position in the DRC; particularly in Katanga and the communities in the concession. This will increase with the company expansion and a strong communications program is a key element in the company's ability to maintain that position.
Responsibilities
- The Communications Manager will provide high-level strategic input and operational management to TFM Communication programs. This will include both external and internal communications and the interpreter/translation group as well.
- Under the direction of Corporate Communications and working primarily in cooperation with the Social & Governmental Affairs departments, he or she will:
- Develop DRC media responses and manage media relations.
- Develop and implement employee communications programs and initiatives.
- Develop communications materials such as brochures, newsletters, videos and display posters.
- Supervise TFM Communications Team and lead the implementation of all communications programs.
- Develop primary messages and communications strategies/plans in coordination with TFM Social and Government Affairs departments and communications management in the U.S.
- Serve as primary media spokesperson. Manage media relations for TFM in the DRC
- Lead and document TFM communications conference calls. Represent TFM at public conferences and forums, as appropriate.
- Identify and facilitate communications assessment training needs and the provision of training for TFM Communications staff.
- Budget and track TFM communications spending.
Requirements:
- Bachelors and/or Masters Degree in communications, public relations, business administration/economics, or related communications fields.
- Ten (10+ years) plus year of extensive, practical experience in leading communications program activities; with an emphasis on the private sector.
- Capable of adapting to remote living conditions; in African settings.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in both French and English. (Fluency in Swahili a plus!)
- Knowledge of budget preparation and administration.
- Practical experience in evaluating, training and motivating employees.
- Proven organizational skills. Ability to deal with stressful situations in a challenging environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and any publication software.
Work Environment:
- Position involves work to be predominantly executed in rural areas of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Resources can be limited, so the candidate must be a self starter, have good personal organization skills for managing activities across multiple sites and in challenging circumstances.
- Position may on occasion require long hours and weekend work.
- Position requires work in mining/manufacturing environments where walking, climbing stairs and ladders and accessing equipment will be required.
