Organizational Background: Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights is a non-profit 501(c)(3) service-based human rights organization founded in 1888 and headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Heartland Alliance is the largest human rights organization also providing care and outreach in the United States. As its mission states, “Heartland Alliance advances the human rights and responds to the human needs of endangered populations – particularly the poor, the isolated and the displaced – through the provision of comprehensive and respectful services and the promotion of permanent solutions leading to a more just global society.” Heartland Alliance is one of the largest implementers of HIV/AIDS programs targeting men who have sex with men (MSM) and other most-at-risk populations (MARPs), with large PEPFAR-funded HIV projects in Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire and the Dominican Republic. Through partnerships with local organizations, Heartland Alliance is developing and implementing short, medium, and long-term strategies to improve health, rights and protections for MSM, female and male sex workers (SW), people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and other highly vulnerable populations. Heartland Alliance is working to formalize and strengthen the institutional and technical capacity of community-based organizations to mobilize responses to the epidemic. Projects focus on grassroots, participatory approaches to: train and support HIV prevention peer educators; reach marginalized populations with critical HIV prevention outreach; provide community-based palliative care services to MSM and SW living with HIV; and work with key government and non-governmental stakeholders to integrate comprehensive HIV programming for MARPs into national strategies. In addition, Heartland Alliance is a global leader in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights and protections, working with grassroots LGBT organizations in over 30 countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
