Heartland Alliance is the largest human rights organization also providing care and outreach in the United States. As its mission states, “Heartland Alliance advances the human rights and responds to the human needs of endangered populations – particularly the poor, the isolated and the displaced – through the provision of comprehensive and respectful services and the promotion of permanent solutions leading to a more just global society.” Heartland Alliance is one of the largest implementers of HIV/AIDS programs targeting MSM and other most-at-risk populations, with large PEPFAR-funded HIV projects in the Dominican Republic, Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire. In addition, Heartland Alliance is a global leader in LGBT rights and protections, working with grassroots LGBT organizations in over 30 countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
In Ghana, Heartland Alliance works with a grassroots non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Accra. This organization supports a wide range of programs that address the sexual health needs of LGBT individuals in Ghana, including:
• Providing HIV/AIDS prevention and support services to LGBT individuals (with a specific focus on MSM); • Coordinating a safe, educational and supportive space for community members to meet, organize and provide mutual social support; • Developing and implementing an advocacy strategy for ensuring the respect of sexual rights and human rights of MSM and LGBT populations.
Overview: Heartland Alliance is currently implementing the Comprehensive HIV Prevention Program for MSM in Ghana (CHPPMG) in partnership with the local NGO. Through this program, Heartland Alliance works with the NGO to reach MSM in Accra with a minimum package of quality HIV prevention messages. Through this partnership, Heartland Alliance is supporting the development of the local NGO’s organizational and technical capacity, ensuring the development of an organization that is capable of developing and implementing short, medium, and long-term strategies for supporting improved health, rights and protections for MSM and LGBT individuals in Ghana.
Key Responsibilities: • Work with NGO staff to assess the needs of MSM and LGBT individuals in Ghana, understanding the specific needs of sexual minorities in Ghana; • Facilitate the NGO’s development of a strategic plan that addresses the needs identified through assessments; • Develop and implement a capacity building plan identifying and prioritizing specific gaps that need to be addressed, the actions to be taken in addressing each gap, the deadlines for those actions, and staff member responsible for completing each action; • Communicate with Heartland Alliance HQ and other country programs to ensure the NGO’s needs are met; • Strengthen financial systems to accurately track expenditures against grant budgets; • Ensure proper monitoring and evaluation of the program to gauge progress against targets, and to gauge outcomes and impact of the NGO’s programs; • Improve the NGO’s fundraising capacity by researching potential funding opportunities, drafting grant proposals and interfacing with donors; • Assist with administrative tasks, including drafting and submitting monthly and quarterly reports to donors, procuring office equipment/supplies and the coordinating office repairs.
Qualifications: • Degree in public health, public policy, international development, social work, gender studies or other relevant field (required), or master’s degree (preferred); • Knowledge of and interest in HIV/AIDS prevention for most-at-risk populations (MARPs), gender and sexuality, and global LGBT rights (required); • Knowledge of and interest in grassroots community mobilization, capacity building and training (required); • Experience living and working in Sub-Saharan Africa (required); • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English (required); • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (required); • Familiarity with US Government and President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) programs, and monitoring and evaluation systems (preferred).
