Organizational Setting and Reporting
The position is within the Security Council Subsidiary Organs Branch of the Security Council Affairs Division in the Department of Political Affairs in New York. Under the general supervision of the Chief of the Security Council Subsidiary Organs Branch, the incumbent reports to the Senior Political Affairs Officer/the Secretary of the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1718 (2006).
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
Gather, select and analyze information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press, on compliance, outreach and dialogue
Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of relevant political developments, in general, and, in particular, as they affect the work of the Panel of Experts established pursuant to Security Council resolution 1874 (2009) with a view to providing relevant inputs to the experts
Collect and consolidate reports, documents and other material emanating from the Committee and the Panel of Experts, including for the purposes of maintaining a database
Organize and administer an electronic database in support of all operations of the Panel of Experts
Assist in establishing methods, in the context of the management of the database, for systematic classification, categorization and retrieval of material acquired, developed and retained for further study by the Panel of Experts
Assist the Panel of Experts in retrieving information from the database, including by designing proper and relevant searches
If requested, liaise with internal and external organizations to enhance the Panel of Experts' collection of data
Arrange provision of relevant information and external expertise as requested by the Experts
Travel with the experts, as necessary
Take notes of meetings of the experts and maintain records
Undertake special assignments as requested by the experts
Perform other duties as required.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related area. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament or related area, of which at least three years of experience working in an intergovernmental organization, is required. Work experience relating to the Security Council and its subsidiary bodies is desirable.
Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the first level university degree recognised by the United Nations.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post fluency in English (both, oral and written) is required. Knowledge of Chinese (Mandarin) is desirable. Knowledge of Korean is desirable.
Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers In accordance with established rules and procedures.- This position has funding for a finite period of at least one year and is financed as a special political mission. Extension of the appointment is subject to the extension of the mandate and/or availability of the funds.
