Organizational Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the African Climate Policy Center (ACPC), in the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). The incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Coordinator, ACPC, Special Initiatives Division.
Responsibilities
Support ACPC in positioning itself to help African countries design appropriate forest policies in relation to climate change and also meet some of the unique forestry and climate related services that countries are grappling with.
Design ACPC's work program on forestry and REDD+ through close working relationship with specialists of other subject matters (such as agriculture, energy and water) and cross-cutting issues (such as institutions and governance).
Generate in-depth knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts, approaches and practicies relevant to policy analysis as they relate to forestry and REDD+.
Managing the development, monitoring and evaluation of forestry and REDD+ projects.
Contributing to the advancement of knowledge and understandings emerging in related areas such as Land Use Classification and Forestry (LUCF).
Promoting the understanding of the ecosystems approach in regard to climate change adaptation and mitigation in the forestry sector in Africa.
Contributing to the organization and delivery of trainings and other capacity-building activities for policy makers, policy informants and relevant organizations on climate change adaptation and mitigation in the forestry sector.
Leading the mainstreaming of climate and forestry issues (the imperatives to reduce deforestation, forest degradation and to promote sustainable forest management) into national development and sectoral policies.
Working effectively with other specialists in ACPC and ECA to assess the interactions between forestry and REDD+ vis-a-vis other sectors in order to mitigate negative interactions and harness synergies.
Leading the preparation of the forestry and REDD+ related content of ACPC i.e. publications, reports and studies, in close collaboration with other specialists in ACPC.
Contributing to collecting, analyzing, synthesizing, packaging and disseminating data and information on forestry and REDD+ for effective utilization by end-users as well as identifying and disseminating best practices relevant to forestry and REDD+.
Assisting member states, RECs and other regional organizations in building consensus and articulating common positions and strategies on climate change mitigation and adaptation;
Identifying and supporting regional networks of institutions and experts and delivering advisory services to member states, African regional and sub-regional organizations and institutions, transboundary forestry resources and initiatives, on climate change and forestry issues;

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's Degree or equivalent) in forestry, forest management or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of ten years progressively responsible experience on issues of forest management and REDD+ at the regional or country level in Africa is required. This should include at least three years of experience in research/analytical work on the relations between REDD+ or forest management and development. Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the first-level university degree recognized by the United Nations.
Languages
English and French are the working Languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English or French is required. Working knowledge of the other is an advantage. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

This is a project post. Filling of this position is subject to funding availability and the initial appointment will be for a period of one year. Extension of the appointment is subject to extension of the mandate and/or the availability of funds.
