2. Major duties and responsibilities:
Within limits of delegated authority and depending on location, the Security Officer may be responsible for the following duties:(These duties are generic and may not be performed by all Security Officers at this level); Ensure physical security and safety of the AUC Headquarters and its staff members; Control the opening, closure and entry into buildings to ensure security of the AUC premises; issue building passes as appropriate; Manage all aspects of the administration and work of security guards and watchmen; Ensure that routine patrols and or sector patrols are conducted to check security of buildings, personnel, equipment and adherence to rules and regulations; Receive, record and appropriately action information received through all communication means; Monitor and control communications network to ensure security and discipline; Attend to visitors/guests, control of identification badges and appointment badges through the use of metal detectors; Guard AU properties and control movements of persons within the AUC Headquarters. Commission; Control movement of vehicles entering into the compound and particularly those entering and leaving the compound after working hours; Assist staff members with problems in the area of security and traffic accidents by responding promptly to distress calls; Conduct security surveys of offices and other AU facilities; Obtain comprehensive security information and produce background papers relating to incidents that affect safety and security ; Instruct personnel in the performance of security services, including fire control and physical security of the premises, first aid procedures, use of equipment and operation of automated alarm and video surveillance system; Conduct investigations as directed and prepare comprehensive reports on accidents and incidents involving AU personnel, installations and equipment; Liaise where necessary with designated host government security, safety and emergency officials; Conduct threat assessments
and site surveys; Prepare and provide security briefings, written security advice and recommendations to the mission hierarchy; Produce incident based security and travel advisories; Prepare quarterly and other routine security reports SSSD; Perform any other duties as may be assigned by supervisors.
3. Qualifications:
The minimum educational level should be completion of secondary education and relevant training in military or police procedures and practices. A higher qualification will be an added advantage. Training in self-defense techniques. The minimum education level should be sufficient enough to allow effective participation in guard training. Should be able to read and write in English, understand guard orders and maintain guard logs and reports Health: Free from all communicable diseases and in good general health without physical defects or abnormalities which would interfere with the performance of any guard duty; Physical condition: Able to perform physical tasks associated with the guard duties to which he/she is assigned; Drug dependency and medication: Shall not be dependent on alcohol or other drugs; if using any prescribed medication, it shall not hinder the performance of assigned guard duties;
4. Work Experience:
At least 3 years of security experience within a national or international police, military, security or fire brigade organization, or in the security service of international organization.
5. Other relevant skills
Professionalism - Knowledge of internal security policies, processes and procedures generally and in particular those related to the place of assignment; knowledge of local laws and practices; ability to gather information from a variety of sources; demonstrated ability to apply good judgment in the context of assignments given; ability to detect and identify dangerous objects and knowledge of how to deal with such objects; ability to remain calm in an emergency situation; willingness to work shifts; trustworthy; high sense of responsibility; alertness; physically fit for duty; emotional stability and neatness; good knowledge of the AU , organizational units, functions and key personnel. A high sense of confidentiality, initiative and good judgment.
Planning & Organizing - The ability to achieve goals and objectives and prioritize activities. Monitors and adjusts plans to meet changing requirements and uses time efficiently.
Communication - Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in English and any of the AU official languages. Ability to provide instructions clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
Technology Awareness - Knowledge in the use and maintenance of standard security and communications equipment; basic computer skills; proficiency in standard computer applications, and other software programs.
Teamwork - Courteous and tactful with the ability to work effectively with people of different national and cultural backgrounds in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
6. LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT: Proficiency in one of the African Union working languages. Knowledge of one or several other working languages would be an added advantage.
7. AGE REQUIREMENT: Candidates must preferably be between 25 and 35 years old.
8. TENURE OF APPOINTMENT: The appointment will be made on a fixed term contract for a period of two (2) years, of which the first twelve months will be considered as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract will be for a annually subject to satisfactory performance and fund availability.
9. REMUNERATION: The salary attached to the position is an annual lump-sum of US$ 11,084.85 inclusive of all allowances for locally recruited staff Applications must be made through the AUC E-recruitment Website http://www.aucareers.org not later than 19th August 2013.
