Applications Requested for A Rocha’s National Director

A Rocha South Africa (ARZA) was established in 2005 with a river care project and primary school environmental education. http://arocha.org/za-en/ - ARZA is one of 20 national A Rocha organizations on five continents. The A Rocha South Africa Board of Trustees recognizes the need for an appropriately qualified National Director (ND) to lead its strategic and organisational development, to raise A Rocha South Africa's profile in South Africa's conservation community, and to ensure the theological and operational integrity of the organisation. Current financial constraints in the NPO sector require A Rocha to find a ND with considerable experience and skill in the area of fund development and business management.

Job Title: National Director
Post Status: Part Time – 3 days per week to start
Duration: Two year contract, renewable.
Responsible to: Chairperson and Trustees of A Rocha South Africa
Relates closely to: A Rocha South Africa’s regional chairpersons, A Rocha International Executive Director
Remuneration: *R125 000 escalating to R240 000 p.a. after no less than 6 months depending on progress inclusive of all benefits, see note below.
Commencement 01 June 2012 (Negotiable)

Key Objectives:

1. To give direction in developing A Rocha South Africa's annual work programme, with the support of the trustees.
2. To ensure adequate resources and management of the organization to implement the strategy.
3. To ensure the financial well being of the organisation through effective fund raising, sound financial planning and reporting.
4. To ensure that the beliefs, ethos and core values of A Rocha are practiced at all levels and in all activities.

Main Responsibilities:

Strategic planning
1. Review and develop A Rocha South Africa's strategic plan with the support of the trustees and in consultation with the staff.
2. Produce A Rocha South Africa's annual work programmes in accordance with the organisation's strategic goals and objectives, and monitor their implementation.

Promoting A Rocha
3. Represent A Rocha South Africa locally, nationally and internationally in both the conservation and Christian communities.
4. Encourage and develop links with A Rocha International and other National A Rocha Organisations, visiting them as opportunities allow.
5. Direct A Rocha South Africa's public relations through delegated staff.
6. Ensure that A Rocha's programmes and activities are consistently presented with a strong, positive image to relevant stakeholders and potential funders.

Organisational management & development
7. Develop the financial sustainability of A Rocha South Africa through grant applications to a range of donor sources, e.g. statutory, corporate, foundations and individuals
8. Nurture the growth of A Rocha community conservation projects in all parts of South Africa.
9. Be responsible for the employment of all staff and volunteers, in accordance with South Africa's employment and safety regulations, and taking legal advice where necessary after consultation with the Board of Trustees.
10. Chair the Management Team and oversee the writing, implementation, review, and appraisal of schedules of work by all A Rocha South Africa members of staff.
11. Ensure that professional development opportunities take place for all A Rocha South Africa staff, and that information regarding best practice in all fields of A Rocha's work is disseminated.
12. Oversee effective financial management of ARZA in consultation with the National Treasurer on the Board of Trustees, including budgets and financial control.
13. Report six times a year to the Board of Trustees on progress in all aspects of the work of A Rocha South Africa.
14. Ensure that A Rocha South Africa is on a sound legal footing for risk management and insurance, and that all legal obligations of the organization are met.

Key Personal Qualities, Qualifications and Experience:

1. A Christian in good standing with a local church whose leadership is supportive of A Rocha's Biblical values and vision - refer to http://arocha.org/700-DSY.
2. Mature ability to relate the Bible's teaching to biodiversity conservation and environmental issues within South Africa's complex social context.
3. University degrees: A Bachelor’s degree or diploma in a relevant branch of conservation science, business administration or managerial science. In addition a post-graduate degree in business administration or managerial science or a demonstrated competency in business management.
4. Fundraising experience, including building relationships with a range of donors is an essential qualification for this position.
5. Developmental skills - ability to plan strategically and manage change.
6. Leadership skills - ability to empower staff and delegate work.
7. Interpersonal and cross-cultural experience and sensitivity.
8. Track-record of high level of performance - innovative with evidence of good relationships.

Location is to be determined by the location of the selected candidate and will also determine the location of the National Office, but must be in one of the following three areas:
Pietermaritzburg
Johannesburg /Centurion/Pretoria,
Greater Cape Town area (Somerset West/Stellenbosch)

Willingness to self relocate to one of the above areas will be a consideration.

Additional considerations:

The selected candidate must be a South African Citizen or be in possession of a valid Permanent Residence Permit at the time of appointment. The successful candidate must be in possession of a valid South African or international drivers licence, and must be willing to use their own motor vehicle for the standard rate of A Rocha reimbursement.

*This part time post is funded from a grant denominated in GB Pounds which is for a maximum duration of two years. If the incumbent’s progress is satisfactory after 6 months it is possible to increase the salary to an equivalent of R240 000 for at least a further 9 months. The incumbent will be required to raise funds to increase this post to a full time appointment with a maximum salary of R 380,000 per annum. Beginning in the second year (or after at least 15 months on accelerated program) the incumbent will be required to have raised his/her full annual salary for the third year on
