DRC Program Manager Free The Slaves

Overview of Position: The principal objective of the Program Manager is to plan and implement Free the Slaves’ strategy toward eradicating slavery in DRC. This includes strengthening the work of Free the Slaves’ local NGO partners in DRC, who are documenting and bringing people out of slavery and improving national and local policy frameworks related to slavery and human trafficking. In addition, the Program Manager supports advocacy work directed at the U.S. government and companies to improve business supply chains affected by slavery in the region. The Program Manager supports and supervises the DRC Coordinator (based in Goma) and is supervised by the Director of Programs (based in Washington, DC). S/he is part of the FTS Programs team. This is an exciting position in Free the Slaves’ newest and fast-growing DRC program.

• Provide support to an emerging coalition against human trafficking in DRC.

• Supervise the DRC Coordinator, based in Goma, and collaborate with the DRC Coordinator on all aspects of the program’s management.

• Lead the process of selecting new partners in FTS’ growing DRC program.

• Support the Director of Programs in advocacy directed at the U.S. government and U.S.-based companies. Liaise between the DRC Coordinator, partners and headquarters staff involved in advocacy.

• Communicate the work, progress, challenges and outcomes of the DRC program to FTS staff, board and the general public.

• Coordinate closely with FTS Research and Communications staff regarding their work in DRC.

• Manage administrative aspects of FTS’ DRC program, including strategy, budgeting and annual work planning. Draft grant-related materials related to DRC grants, including applications and reports to FTS funders.

Requirements:

• An existing right to work in the U.S. (green card or U.S. citizenship).
• Fluency in English and French. (Swahili fluency is not required but is a plus.)
• Relevant post-graduate qualification (e.g. International Development, Conflict Resolution, Community Work/Social Work) or breadth of work and educational experiences to substitute effectively.
• Enthusiasm for making one or two trips per year to DRC for approximately 2-3 weeks.
• Passion and commitment to end modern slavery.
• Innovative spirit and willingness to use creative thinking.
• Determination to sustain positive, respectful and dynamic relationships with overseas partners, alongside expectations of mutual accountability.
• Ability to develop and manage budgets and understand income and expenditure reports. Strong attention to financial details.
• Ability to work mainly without significant administrative support.
• Strong English writing skills, including ability to write for different audiences.

Preferred:

• Experience in DRC or Africa’s Great Lakes region is a plus. Work with grassroots, community-based organizations, while based in a Global South country. Work involving rights-based community organizing and development of decent work/income generation opportunities.
• Experience and education connected to grassroots-led social change and to the anti-slavery movement is a strong plus, but is not required.
• Experience managing grants is a plus.
