Rio Tinto has recently acquired control of Riversdale in Mozambique to form Rio Tinto Coal Mozambique (RTCM). RTCM currently has 2 projects, the Benga project, which is set to produce first coal in 2011, and the Zambeze project, which is at feasibility stage. RTCM has an expansive coal resource and a very significant growth profile. In Mozambique, Rio Tinto also has an interest in a power generation project, Iron Ore exploration, Titanium through RTIT.
Reporting to the CFO, the Manager Commercial will develop and implement a strategic framework to manage the major commercial contracts across Rio Tinto Mozambique operations, and to provide high level, strategic advice, governance and leadership in all matters of a Commercial nature to support business decision making.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the effective commercial management of the organisation through the development and implementation of a Commercial Management Strategy. Implement a robust and relevant reporting framework to ensure successful deployment of the strategy.
- Develop and implement processes and procedures that will ensure consistent, reliable and predictable delivery of RTCM responsibilities under relevant contracts.
- Negotiate mining contracts, concessions, infrastructure access and other commercial arrangements with Government as required from time to time.
- Negotiate commercial arrangements supporting to the development of various RTCM projects.
- Contribute to the commercial management of relationships with joint venture partners.
- Ensure the review of all contract related documentation submitted by contractors to ensure that it is consistent with contractual agreements and established plans, schedules and cost constraints.
- Liaise regularly with contractor organisations on all issues including management of contract administration meetings.
- Manage the delivery of consistent management reports, analysis of commercial performance and compliance performance across the organisation.
- Report regularly, or as agreed with the Chief Financial Officer, on commercial issues.
- Manage, coordinate and integrate the output of the team on a day-to-day basis to ensure that the various components of the contract management function are carried out effectively.
- Lead the team in HSE and understand and comply with all relevant legislative and HSE requirements.
Key Skills and Experience:
- Tertiary qualified (post graduate qualifications will be advantageous) in a relevant discipline e.g. Commerce, Economics
- Extensive knowledge and at least 15 years experience in a similar role in a heavy industry environment.
- Experience within or significant exposure to infrastructure construction and the mining industry.
- Demonstrated success in maintaining a collaborative working environment with all parties in the management of complex contracts, leading to successful outcomes.
- Experience in the preparation of reports, with the ability to tailor these to a wide range of audiences across geographical locations.
- Proven track record in quickly establishing credibility across a wide range of stakeholders and engaging others to ensure the implementation of effective solutions.
- Demonstrated experience in operating in and contributing to a team environment, in particular sharing workloads and supporting colleagues in a positive manner.
- Commercial management experience at a senior level with responsibility for contract management, including management and resolution of contract claims.
- A results oriented professional with strong commercial acumen and a proven track record of achievement across diverse geographical locations.
- Proven high level commercial transactional skills.
- High-level communication, facilitation and negotiation skills and demonstrated success at creating and maintaining strong business relationships.
- High levels of personal organisation and professionalism and persistence to overcome obstacles.
- Influential yet approachable, with the ability to quickly adapt to new teams and project structures.
- Strong leadership skills, particularly in regards to managing a team in a high pressure, fast paced and dynamic commercial environment
- Well developed analytical and judgment skills for solving complex problems and evaluating alternate courses of action.
- Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
- Ability to speak Portuguese is essential.
