The Association of African Universities (AAU) an International Non-Governmental Organization (INGO), with headquarters in Accra, Ghana, was set up in November 1967 by universities in Africa to promote cooperation among themselves and between them and the international academic community. Job Title IT Specialist
Organisational Unit Communication and Services Department, AAU Secretariat

Purpose of Post
The successful candidate will report to the Head, Communication and Services, and ultimately to the Secretary-General, and will be responsible for the following tasks:
Main Responsibilities
- Manage the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) requirements of the AAU Secretariat by planning and advising on the current and future ICT needs in terms of hardware and software to ensure that the Secretariat is abreast with current ICT developments.
- Provide support for defining, writing, implementing and evaluating the ICT components in all projects implemented by the AAU Secretariat in providing support to the African higher education community.
- Assess Secretariat staff’s ICT training needs and oversee training workshops for staff.
- Manage Internet connectivity by installing and configuring hardware and software, troubleshooting for problems and providing technical support to users to ensure maximum functionality and minimum downtime.
- Liaise with service providers to ensure the maintenance of the Secretariat’s ICT equipment
- Provide technical support to integrate and facilitate the use of the Secretariat’s databases by advising, designing, building, programming and troubleshooting for bugs
- Ensure the continuous upgrading of the computer systems by the protection of electronic resources through regular backups and against virus attack and other breakdowns
- Provide support for the Project’s training activities workshops, e-forms and other communicative activities
- Provide technical support for the development, maintenance and updating of the website of the Research and Education Networking Unit, especially its clearinghouse on ICT policy and research and education networking.
- Provide technical support for the development of the Database of African Thesis and Dissertations (DATAD) by providing advice on systems and procedures to use in the effective delivery of the project.
- Perform other duties as may be required by the Head, Communication and Services and the Secretary-General
Profile
- A Master’s Degree or equivalent academic qualification with a strong component of information and communication technology at Bachelor’s level
- Minimum of 5 years post-degree working experience related to information resource management, namely:
- Policies, procedures, and practice
- Technology
- Information systems
- Sound technical knowledge on ICT, systems administration, network administration and systems security and be abreast of latest development in these fields
- Strong observation and analytical skills
- Strong problem solving skills
- Excellent skills in both Linux and Windows systems
- Strong knowledge in social networking technologies
- Working knowledge of development languages including HTML, XML, CSS and others
- Experience in online/digital development industry including SEO, Marketing, PPC, ORM, Social media
- Proficiency in a variety of programmes including Adobe CS5 (Experience in Flash integration is an advantage), MS Office and others
- Strong communication and admin skills.
- Proficiency in cross-browser compatibility, in specific IE6;
- Experience using JavaScript frameworks such as JQuery;
- Excellent understanding and implementation experience with analytics setup, implementation, reporting and SEO;
- Good working knowledge of web marketing trends and campaign components such as writing for the web, newsletters, banners, polling, social media and blogs;
- Familiarity with web content management systems preferably WWCM.

Duration of Position
The contract will be for a period of four (4) years, subject to a probationary period of one (1) year and is renewable, subject to the availability of project funding.
Conditions of Employment
- The AAU offers an attractive remuneration package calculated and paid in US dollars.
- The candidate will be entitled to annual leave of twenty-one (21) working days.
