Time to leave the country... and gain new skills and practical experience in community-based development in Malawi?
Progressio is currently recruiting volunteers who will depart from the UK on 31 March 2012.
As an ICS Empower volunteer, you could bring new ideas, skills and perspectives to help local organisations to overcome poverty and injustice. You do not need years of previous experience, we are looking for volunteers who are committed, keen, able to work with others and open to learning.
Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, where people struggle to survive on subsistence farming. Communities are vulnerable to droughts and heavy rainfall and their livelihoods are put at risk. The high prevalence of HIV also impacts on the country’s people and its development.
Progressio’s ICS Empower 10-week placements offer British-based young adults - 18 to 22 year olds - the possibility to gain first-hand experience of community based development. Through ICS Empower, you can help local partners and communities in Malawi to overcome poverty.
Whether you feel you have a lot or little to share, you will certainly develop new skills through varied activities and working with local people, and contribute to lasting change. There will be plenty of opportunities to be creative and use your initiative. As you will be part of a diverse group, you will all have different skills, experiences and interests which you can use as a team to have a real impact.
Previous ICS Empower volunteers in Malawi have been involved in working with local partners on a range of activities: including strengthening advocacy messages around HIV prevention, gender and human rights; mitigating stigma and discrimination among people living with HIV in their faith community and beyond; organising awareness campaigns around positive behavioural change with and for young people; undertaking research and conducting surveys; conducting workshops or helping local people organise events and campaigns; assisting local organisations and schools to develop educational materials; raising awareness of environmental issues and increasing the capacity of schools to create greener landscapes; promoting nutrition gardening; marketing of local produce and developing packaging, just to name a few!
