Duties & Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Head of the Language Services Unit, the Translator/Reviser will perform the
following tasks:
a) Translate documents as requested by staff of the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) from French into English;
documents cover a broad range of subjects dealt with by the OTP (including legal, political, social, economic,
financial, military, administrative and forensic matters);
b) Revise high-level and sensitive translations produced by other English translators in the Unit, assuming
responsibility and accountability for the quality of English translations;
c) Edit documents drafted in English by other OTP staff by correcting ungrammatical or unidiomatic use of
language and applying in-house knowledge of the ICC;
d) Act as the Unit#s focal point for all translation work by, amongst other things, coordinating the
assignment of translations within the Unit, negotiating deadlines where required and ensuring the timely return of
all requests to clients;
e) Supervise the comprehensive induction of new translators into the Unit#s translation processes;
f) Oversee the selection process of suitable candidates to be put onto the Unit#s roster of freelance
language professionals;
g) Approve French/English terminology, thereby ensuring harmonized usage;
h) Contribute to the development of policies and guidelines relating to translation and interpretation in the
Office;
i) Perform any other language services as required by the Head of the Language Services Unit.
Essential Qualifications
a) University degree in linguistics, translation, or other relevant subject-matter;
b) At least nine years of relevant work experience (seven years with an advanced degree), preferably with at
least two years in translation in an international organisation;
c) Some degree of specialisation in the aforementioned subjects dealt with by the Court;
d) Knowledge of CAT tools (familiarity with MultiTrans would be an asset) and proficiency in MS Office
applications (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel);
e) Ability to keep strict standards of confidentiality and security;
f) Ability to work effectively under tight deadlines;
g) Ability to work effectively and constructively in teams comprising members from a broad variety of
disciplinary backgrounds and professions;
h) Ability to work in a non-discriminatory manner and with respect for diversity (e.g. gender/ethnic origin);
i) Professional integrity.
KNOWLEDGE OF LANGUAGES
Mother#tongue proficiency in English and a high level of proficiency in French. Knowledge of another official
language of the Court would be considered a valuable asset.
