Leading the Political Division’s support for the ‘Secretary-General’s Good Offices for Peace’, the post holder will identify, organise and at times personally support the deployment of high-level envoys; provide expert technical advice on political conflict resolution; and oversee the provision of capacity-building in member states aimed at long-term reduction in political tension. The post-holder is also responsible for coordinating support for the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group in its work to promote and protect democracy, the rule of law and human rights.
The role involves advising when and where the Secretary-General’s ‘Good Offices’ may be introduced to mitigate political tensions and promote the Commonwealth’s fundamental political values; developing and managing the implementation of related capacity-building activities; and contributing to the ongoing development and understanding of contemporary practices in political conflict mitigation, including preparing speeches, policy papers and briefing materials, all within out consultative, inclusive and collegiate environment. The role also involves overseeing and coordinating reports to the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group and support for implementation of the Group’s decisions.
The ideal candidate will have sound political judgement and sensitivity; effective diplomatic, negotiating and management skills; and be able at times to work long hours and under pressure in challenging situations. You will have at least ten years’ experience at a senior level including in preventive diplomacy and political negotiation, a background that includes work at the intergovernmental level, and demonstrated success in managing and leading a diverse team to deliver practical results.
