PSI seeks an Associate Researcher to support a variety of activities undertaken by the Research & Metrics department whose objective is to increase the use of evidence-based decision making within PSI and among social marketing stakeholders. This position will provide technical assistance and partnership to track key metrics, including Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) averted, population-based measures of disease burden, behavior change, measures of equity, and of market access to needed health products and services.
Key responsibilities include: secondary data collection; support to health impact modelers; development of communication tools for metrics methodologies; and communications and capacity building related to metrics. The position requires flexibility, and willingness to assume varied duties and projects. It is based in Washington, D.C., entails 25% travel and reports to the Senior Technical Advisor for Metrics.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Critically assess and collect secondary health and population data used to estimate DALYs averted and burden of disease; support health impact modelers to update and develop models with latest available data and methodologies
• Work with R&M team and other departments to develop new communication materials and tools to link metrics to key business decisions and produce in-depth, strategic analyses
• Support development of new metrics; document and communicate metrics methodologies
• Improve PSI’s internal capacity to understand and use key metrics for decision-making; contribute to metrics capacity building initiative for research staff, country office staff, and staff based at PSI/Washington
• Track requests for metrics queries and technical assistance; ensure that internal and external communications are appropriately targeted, and align with R&M brand
• Coordinate the inter-departmental working group on Metrics to develop policies and processes for DALY activities. Document processes, and update internal stakeholders on changes or establishment of policies.
• Contribute to the production of routine monthly and annual reports on health impact and on total market approach
• Contribute to the fields of public health, social marketing, and metrics by authoring articles and publishing in peer-reviewed journals; presenting at conferences and meetings; and documenting lessons learned for internal and external stakeholders
• Provide other technical assistance as needed
QUALIFICATIONS
• Masters in public health, health economics, demography, sociology, or a related field
• 2-3 years of experience in global health or public health, working on metrics or policy
• Experience with population health metrics, costing analysis, or the development and use of routine health information systems.
• Excellent written, verbal and inter-personal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate with technicians and non-technicians along a variety of learning curves and needs
• Experience in research tool development, results dissemination, project design, or technical assistance in developing country settings
• Must possess excellent analytical and critical thinking skills
• Ability to critically assess secondary data sources in global health and population
• Proficiency in quantitative data analysis
• Demonstrated ability to manage projects to successful completion
• Experience linking evidence to policy in a global health or a related disease area, e.g. HIV/AIDS, malaria, or reproductive health.
• Ability to contribute positively to a team
• Ability to travel up to 25% of the time internationally
Preference will be given to candidates with work experience in low and middle income countries, knowledge of public health issues and social marketing product, ability to speak French, Spanish, or Portuguese, and/or familiarity with the international donor development community.
