Job Description
The Development Data Group (DECDG) is the World Bank’s focal point for statistics. Its mission is to provide high quality data, data products, analytical tools, and services to users inside and outside the Bank and to support developing countries engaged in building their statistical capacity. The work of the Department requires extensive partnerships with other international organizations, with member countries’ statistical offices, and, within the Bank, with country and network teams.
DECDG seeks to fill two vacancies: an Economist position, and a Statistical Officer position.
Within DECDG, the Global Monitoring Cluster is responsible for the bulk of the department’s data collection, database management, and statistical publications, including the World Development Indicators, Global Development Finance, and online databases. The cluster comprises three specialized teams whose members collaborate with the Bank’s country and network teams and international agencies to locate new sources of data and construct new indicators, prepare data documentation; and develop standards and validation rules to ensure data quality. The cluster is also responsible for developing and maintaining monitoring systems such as the Millennium Development Goals and IDA Results Measurement websites. There is extensive interaction with other units in the department, especially the Client Services and Communications team, which is responsible for all communications activities including media, clients, and other users, web management, outreach activities and promoting DECDG products and services and the International Statistical Programs Cluster.
Desired Skills & Experience
DECDG is seeking to recruit an ECONOMIST with knowledge and experience in social sector indicators and analysis. The economist will work with the Socio-demographic Data Team that is responsible for producing sections of the World Development Indicators (WDI) and global estimates on poverty, inequality and social development indicators. The candidate should therefore have strong analytical skills and experience in working with large datasets as well as sample survey data, along with knowledge of policies and programs in the fields of poverty, and at least two of the following: health, education, labor and employment, migration and urbanization.
DECDG is seeking a STATISTICAL OFFICER who has extensive knowledge and experience in international statistics. As a member of the Financial Data Team, the statistical officer will take a lead role overseeing the work on debt reporting to World Bank’s Debtor Reporting System (DRS) and the quarterly debt statistics, improving the quality and timeliness of the financial data base and establishing best practices for data review, validation, and data documentation.
