Role and Responsibilities
To actively support Marketing at HQ by providing and facilitating relevant and timely information for Medair’s communication and fundraising activities. Support the field team in dealing with communication towards external sources and monitor Medair’s visibility in the field and support the internal communications of the Somaliland programme. Improve the quality of programmes in Somaliland by implementation of appropriate and sustainable monitoring and evaluation systems and the promotion of accountability to people affected by the crisis.
Project Overview
The projects Medair is currently implementing are: WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene), Nutrition, Health, Livelihoods (to be started in 2011).

Key activity areas
Marketing Communication
• Draft and implement country programme annual workplan based on HQ Marketing’s communication and fundraising activities. • Inform HQ Marketing as soon as Medair initiates a survey (in case of new emergency) or launches an emergency response. Provide supporting fundraising or communication material. • Proactively and reactively provide testimonies, interviews, quotes and updates on programmes and projects (tailored for Marketing purposes) according to the Donation Dashboard offers. • Support the Marketing Resources Officer in preparing and adapting communication and fundraising material for input into HQ Marketing document management software and online photo database (photos, testimonies, facts, stories, quotes, reports, etc.) • Be the field focal point for all communication and fundraising material approval. • Bi-Monthly, report to Marketing according to the set principles and documents. • Send regularly raw videos that illustrate Medair’s activities. • Draft ToRs and contracts of consultant photographers, media staff etc.
Brand Management (messaging, look (graphics), photography, visibility)
• Promote, review, and audit the design and application of Medair’s and donor’s visibility in the field. • Be updated on donor visibility budgets and conditions according to Medair and donor guidelines. • Plan and initiate the design, production and distribution of field visibility items, following the brand guidelines.
Internal Communication
• Pro-actively support the team in improving internal communication, i.e. writing internal news magazine, contribute to team meetings, quarterly meetings etc.
Media Relations
• Develop relationships with press and media contacts in Kenya and Somaliland and be pro-active in developing a database with media contacts in Kenya and Somaliland. • Liaise with local and international media in the field, and beneficiaries. • Upon explicit approval from CD, DO and Marketing HQ, act as media/PR spokesperson for Medair’s interests in the field. • Prepare, facilitate and accompany field visits of donors, photographers, journalists, or media crews. • Draft media statements after approval from Marketing at Headquarters.
Monitoring & Evaluation
• Work with Project Managers and others in setting up and assisting in the implementation of appropriate and sustainable M&E systems and tools in the respective programmes. • Encourage retention of M&E institutional memory in programmes by advising on reporting and communication of lessons learned for the benefit of present and future projects. • Provide training on M&E techniques where appropriate for Project Managers and other relevant staff. • Provide input in the design and evaluation of the Country Strategy. • Feedback quality issues and complaints from beneficiaries to PMs and DCD after field visits.
Beneficiary Accountability
• Implement a comprehensive Beneficiary Accountability system within the Somaliland programme. • Ensure that the following HAP requirements are continually monitored and reported upon: Delivering on commitments, Staff competency, Sharing information, Participation, Handling complaints, Learning and continual improvement.
Qualifications
• Communications or related PR, or Media related qualification • Qualifications and experience in monitoring and evaluation of humanitarian programmes • Training or experience in multimedia production and editing desirable; Management qualification desirable
Experience / Competencies
• Minimum 2 years professional experience in a similar position • Written ability to target different audiences and to tailor output accordingly, ability to process and synthesise large amounts of complex data into readable and concise formats against tight deadlines • Capacity to work under pressure, in an insecure environment and to tight deadlines
Medair standard working requirements for the field
• Committed to Medair values • At least one year of professional experience in a relevant field (more experience preferred) • Minimum 3 months inter-cultural overseas experience • Willing to commit to Medair for a minimum of one year • Single, or married (without dependent children) • Strong English communication skills (oral and written) • Familiar with Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook • Able to live and work with a multicultural team under difficult conditions • Strong character traits, including emotional stability, adaptability, ability to handle stress, cultural and gender sensitivity, honesty, and physically fit • Successful completion of Medair Relief & Rehabilitation Orientation Course (ROC)

Working Conditions
Based in Burao, with frequent visits to field locations and potential new project areas. Occasionally working from Medair East Africa office, Nairobi, Kenya. Security is always a concern and routine team briefs give information and advise both nationals and internationals on the current security status.
