The person and the job:
If you have a PhD in Agricultural Economics, Economics or equivalent and three years’ post-doctoral experience, you may be the person IWMI (www.iwmi.org) is looking for to fill the post of Researcher – Agricultural Economics. As a researcher you will initiate, develop, lead and carry out research projects and sustain partnerships within IWMI’s strategic plan and Theme priorities, specifically in relation to agricultural economics. You will be based in IWMI’s Southern Africa Office in Pretoria and will be reporting to the Head, Southern Africa.
As specialist you will:
· analyze macro and micro economic environments, agricultural investment, agricultural growth and trade performance as well as poverty trends in Southern Africa with a particular focus on water;
· prepare annual country level reports of monitoring and evaluation of agriculture sector performance in Southern African countries with a particular focus on water; and
· contribute to the preparation of an annual regional report of monitoring and evaluation of agricultural water performance in Southern Africa.
In general you will:
· conduct research consistent with IWMI’s mission and priorities;
· apply effective project management processes to assigned activities within agreed timetable, ensuring progress is reported through appropriate means to colleagues and stakeholders;
· publish results in international scientific journals and other relevant media and ensure research results are disseminated to targeted groups;
· conceive research projects, liaising as appropriate with colleagues and potential partners; and
· ensure activities complying with IWMI’s corporate policies and procedures.
You will possess:
· a PhD in Agricultural Economics, Economics or equivalent;
· a minimum of 3 years post-doctoral research experience;
· knowledge of the agricultural sector in Southern Africa, particularly on the role of water and water investments in agricultural growth or an ability to apply related knowledge to the water sector;
· a record of peer-reviewed publications;
· work experience in developing countries;
· familiarity with the concepts and tools required to undertake economic analysis;
· proficiency in quantitative and qualitative methodologies;
· strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity;
· an excellent command of both oral and written English; and
· the ability to undertake field and policy analysis.
It would be useful if you also had:
· work experience in Africa, particularly Southern Africa; and
· working knowledge of Portuguese
This is an internationally recruited position with a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes a housing allowance, transport, education, shipping assistance, annual home leave, retirement, and health insurance package. IWMI’s policy is to appoint staff initially on three year contracts which are subject to renewal, depending on performance and institute’s needs.
