THE MARTIN ENNALS FOUNDATION (MEF)
Vacancy for the post of Director
Background:
The mission of the Martin Ennals Foundation (MEF) is to enhance the visibility and the protection of human rights defenders and to build awareness and recognition for their work, through publicity and support, principally by granting of an annual award.
Context:
Created in 1993, the Martin Ennals Foundation (MEF) set up the Martin Ennals Award (MEA) for Human Rights Defenders that is considered today the main non-governmental human rights award. The Foundation is governed by a Board of Trustees, composed of seven individuals, whilst the selection of the winner of the Award is the responsibility of a Jury, composed of ten well-known human rights NGOs. The Geneva-based organisation OMCT (World Organisation against Torture) provides a home to the MEA and employs the Director of the Foundation through a project funded solely by the MEF. MEA’s website provides detailed information on the laureates and the work of the Foundation. The current incumbent leaves in July 2012 and the Foundation is now seeking a timely replacement. The next award ceremony will take place in Geneva on 2 October 2012, organised in cooperation with the City of Geneva. See www.martinennalsaward.org
The key purpose of the position is to further enhance the impact and reputation of the Award and to ensure a stable funding base for this objective. The salary offered is competitive, bearing in mind that the Foundation operates in a non-profit environment.
