Description of duties: Under the general supervision of the Advisor, Governing Bodies (GBO) and the direct supervision of the Specialist, Translation, Terminology, and Computational Linguistics (GBO/TR), the incumbent is responsible for, but not necessarily limited to, the following assigned duties: a)Translate and self-revise from Spanish into English texts of considerable difficulty submitted by the Organization's entities, including the office of Governing Bodies, using machine translation post-editing as the primary work mode. Documents for translation cover a wide variety of technical and scientific subject areas related to public health and international development (including medicine, agriculture, computer science, sanitary engineering, etc.), as well as administrative and legal texts; b) Coordinate the external network of English translators in order to ensure that the English translation needs of the Organization are met in a cost-effective and timely manner, adhering to recognized standards of quality; c) Analyze translation requests and assign them to the most appropriate external translators available; d) Negotiate deadlines and terms with originating entities; answer external translators' queries and/or work with technical programs to resolve translation issues; e) Assist in the hiring of external translators for the English roster; review résumés; prepare, administer, and grade tests; issue a recommendation as to their suitability; f) Provide translation support in public health emergencies, including working under tight deadlines and quick turnaround of translated documents; g) Provide support for terminology and style in English; respond to queries about terminology, nomenclature, translation, and writing posed by staff; conduct linguistic research and assist in the maintenance of glossaries; h) Provide feedback for machine translation dictionaries; i) Participate in professional forums, conferences and seminars; share knowledge and practices with translators of the United Nations System; keep abreast of specialized terminology and best translation practices; j) Perform other duties as assigned. | |

Experience: Essential: Seven years of combined national and international experience as a Spanish>English translator. Desirable: Translation experience with an international organization or NGO, preferably in public health, medicine or international development would be an asset. | |
Languages: Excellent command, both idiomatic and technical, of English as mother tongue and thorough knowledge of Spanish. Knowledge of French and/or Portuguese would be an asset. | |
