IUCN, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural resources, was founded in 1948 and brings together nearly 1,100 members (States ,government agencies, NGOs and affiliates) and some 10,000 scientists and experts from 181 countries in a unique worldwide partnership. Its mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity
of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable. Within the framework of global conventions IUCN has helped over 75 countries to prepare and implement national conservation and biodiversity strategies.
IUCN Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO) covers twenty three countries in the Horn of Africa, Eastern Africa, Southern Africa and the Western Indian Ocean and is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the positions indicated below.
The Ecosystem Based Adaptation (EBA) Programme for Mountain Ecosystems in Uganda, Nepal and Peru aims to strengthen the capacities of these three countries, which are particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts, to strengthen ecosystem resilience for promoting ecosystem-based adaptation (EBA) options and to reduce the vulnerability of communities, with particular emphasis on mountain ecosystems. The programme is funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) through its International Climate Initiative, and is implemented through a partnership of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
POSITION TITLE: Driver
PROJECT: Ecosystems Based Approach
REPORTS TO: Project Officer, EBA
LOCATION: Mbale, Uganda
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Handling Office Delivery, logistics and driving needs
1. Drives IUCN vehicles on various official errands such as but not limited to picking up and delivering supplies, documents, mail, staff and guests to various destinations.
2. Communicate effectively with Supervisor on driving schedules/timeline.
3. Maintain a good driving record and ensure all incidents are reported in a timely manner and through appropriate channels.
4. Ensure the safety of the vehicle and accessories at all times during the time of use.
5. Facilitate routine maintenance of office vehicles, including proper and regular completion of vehicle maintenance records. The Driver/Messenger is expected to notify the Supervisor when vehicle servicing is required (either routine or due to mechanical fault), and is responsible for ensuring that vehicles are washed and cleaned, refuelled, tyres and engine oil checked.
- Maintenance of accurate vehicle service schedules
- Preparation of monthly vehicle charges for submission to the Finance Department by the 2nd day of the following month.
- Ensure compliance with applicable traffic laws, regulations, and/or IUCN rules, standards and guidelines on vehicle usage.
- Occasionally undertake out-of-town duties within Uganda.
- Keep records as required and maintain a clear daily record of work done.

This position is subject to standard security vetting.

Undertake any other duties as assigned by the Project Officer and administration support team
Competencies
At least Uganda Certificate of education
Possession of a valid Driver’s license with at least five years of continuous driving experience in a reputable and busy organization and/or City.
Exceptional knowledge of Kampala’s road network and driving conditions and be able to effectively monitor up to date traffic information.
Good communication skills both oral and written English
Excellent interpersonal skills and experience working in a multi-stakeholder project environment.
Clean driving record, with no violation of traffic law or major accidents.
