Background The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) mandate is to act as a project delivery platform for UN system agencies, funds and programmes, international and regional financial institutions, intergovernmental organizations, donor and recipient governments, and non-profit non-governmental organizations. As a self-financing entity within the UN system, UNOPS must ensure that the projects it delivers meet client expectations in terms of cost, quality and time, while at the same time ensuring that these projects collectively meet a broader array of success criteria. The UNOPS Kenya Operations Centre (KEOC) serves multiple clients in the provision of infrastructure works and associated project support services. It recently signed a Service Level Agreement with the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime to provide project support services under its Counter Piracy Program. The Architectural Assistant will report directly to the UNOPS Project Infrastructure Unit (PIU) Manager. The Architectural Assistant will liaise with senior government officials, client representatives and end user operatives within the region and will be instrumental in the identification, design and delivery of a quality product to time and within budget across all projects undertaken by PIU.
Duties and Responsibilities Under the overall supervision of the PIU Manager and under direct supervision of the Project Architect, Project Infrastructure Unit, the Architectural Assistant will perform the following tasks: 1. Prepare and check Architectural sketches and presentations as instructed by the Project Architect of the PIU; 2. Prepare and check Construction drawings through application of CAD software principles and practices in all the Architectural and Engineering designs and project documents; Review of drawings under the instructions and supervision of the technical staff and prepare changes, amendments and any other details required;
3. Responsible for the standardization of drawings and the application through CAD software according to standards and specifications of the applicable Architectural and Engineering code and guidelines of the PIU; 4. Check the engineering drawings of prepared projects before tendering and ensure that they comply with PIU guidelines, and facilitate their use and interpretation during the execution of the project; 5. Provide assistance, as needed, in the preparation and checking of Bill of Quantities (BoQ) and the drawings for Architectural and Engineering works through application of Auto-CAD whenever required in the PIU's projects; 6. Perform any other duties as may be requested by the PIU Manager.

- Ability to work under pressure and tight schedules in a multi-cultural environment; Knowledge and capacity to manage project documentation to professional and accurate standards; Flexibility and ability to quickly grasp complex structures; Good team player attitude; Ability to perform with professionalism, integrity and commitment to project demands; Ability to work accurately, control quality and multitask; Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines; Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written; Advanced-user level in relevant computer software applications such as AutoCAD 2012, ArchiCAD 14, Microsoft Office programs and other drawing and design software.
Education/Experience/Language
- Bachelor's degree equivalent in Architectural Drafting, Architecture or Civil Engineering field with at least 5 years of relevant experience (Additional 2 years of relevant work experience, preferably in combination with a relevant diploma/certificate, may substitute for the requirement for a bachelor's degree). Experience of working with UN or other Humanitarian/Development agencies an asset; PRINCE2 or equivalent project management qualification is an asset; Excellent command of English both verbally and in writing required;
