Human Rights Watch ("HRW") is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the position of Director of Development and Outreach in Germany. With a current budget of US$44 million annually, HRW is projected to further grow its international operations in the coming years, with the Germany office playing a critical role in its European fundraising efforts.
Description: The Berlin-based Development and Outreach Director will be responsible for overseeing HRW's Germany Committee of supporters and donors; cultivating and directly soliciting major gift contributions; building HRW's constituency in Germany; and managing select advocacy and communications and outreach initiatives, both independently and through the Germany Committee network. The Director for Development and Outreach will report to the Germany Director for Advocacy and Communications and to the European Development Director. The Director's responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Building financial support for the organization by soliciting major gifts and general support funds from supporters in Germany.
- Identifying, cultivating, servicing and soliciting new prospects, existing donors and Germany Committee members.
- Developing local foundation prospects and servicing corporate donors.
- Creating and tracking donor lists, fundraising and expenses.
- Overseeing the production of fundraising, outreach and advocacy events in cities such as Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Berlin, including HRW's Annual Voices for Justice Dinners.
- Overseeing the Germany Committee and associated events including regular meetings and research briefings, as well as advocacy and outreach initiatives.
- Communicating the work of HRW to existing and prospective supporters.
- Working closely with the Germany Director and the Germany Committee to raise awareness of HRW's work and mission within Germany.
- Travelling to cities such as Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt and HRW's international offices including London, Brussels, Geneva and New York as needed.
- Supervising the Development coordinator in the Berlin office.
- Other responsibilities as may be required.
Qualifications: The successful applicant should have at least five to seven years of fundraising experience in Germany. Experience coordinating large fundraising events and managing volunteers is advantageous. S/he and must possess superior oral and written communications skills in both German and English, with knowledge of additional language(s) desirable. The applicant should be a disciplined self-starter with entrepreneurial skills who can work independently but is also capable of fully cooperating as a member of the Development and Outreach team. Familiarity with donor databases, notably Raiser's Edge, is a plus. A demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues along with the capacity to master the issues that represent the mission and program of HRW are required.
