charity: water is US-based non-profit organization dedicated to increasing access to improved water, sanitation, and hygiene services. We grant to non-governmental organizations for implementation of WASH programs. For more information please see www.charitywater.org.
As the Water Programs Officer in Ethiopia, you'll be responsible for overseeing our work in Tigray region and the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region.
Responsibilities:
- Make sure that the organizations that we grant to are up to charity: water standards.
- Work closely with our partners to develop multi-year strategies.
- Supervise implementation of water projects to make sure they are progressing on time.
- Report back to headquarters about what you're seeing on the ground.
- Work closely with other charity: water departments, including Finance, Digital, Creative and Development.
Must-haves:
- 3-5 years direct experience in international development, preferably in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector, though related fields (public health, rural development, etc.) will be considered.
- 3-5 years living in Ethiopia.
- Excellent communication skills, both spoken and written.
- Demonstrated competency in working across cultures.
- Advanced degree in water, sanitation, hygiene or public health; or a Bachelor's degree and more than two years of direct experience.
Skills:
You've been around and know the WASH sector. You know the difference between an AfriDev and India Mark II, between a VIP and an arborloo, between PHAST and CLTS.
You're up to date on new developments. The WASH sector is constantly evolving, and you know what's going on. You keep on top of research in WASH cost and behavior change and development statistics.
Ethiopia is home for you (or close to it). You've lived and worked in Ethiopia, and know the key local players in the sector.
You don't like surprises; you investigate to mitigate them. There's a lot we can't predict in international development, and you like to find out any surprises before someone tells them to you. You think there is nothing worse than having your boss know something before you do.
You like to tell a good story. This is interesting work in an interesting part of the world, and you want to let all of charity: water's supporters know about it.
Location:
The assignment is based in Ethiopia, with extensive domestic and limited international travel.
