J/P HRO is a non-profit organization dedicated to help lift the nation of Haiti out of the rubble and give the Haitian people a better life, is seeking experienced professionals for several exciting opportunities as part of its response to the 2010 Haiti earthquake.
The Structural Engineering Advisor will be responsible for providing the technical support to the Redevelopment department in order to ensure that the defined standards will be met in each project from a structural and geotechnical point of view. S/he will coordinate and support providing technical solutions for the different projects and will validate and ensure the quality of the services provided to J/P HRO by its partners.
Responsibilities:
The Structural Engineering Advisor is expected to support the Project Manager(s) (PM) in the following (but not limited to the following) tasks:
- Assist with the documentation of existing site and building conditions
- Identify problems in the field
- Propose and develop solutions to problems: use drawings, perform analyses and calculations, and develop design solutions
- Assist in the implementation and quality control of design solutions and in the field, both in-house and developed by partners
- Assist in the selection of partners and assessment of their capacity to provide effective design solutions
- Assist in the selection of potential employees and assessment of their capacity to provide effective design solutions
- Prepare Bills of Quantities (BOQs) / perform quantity surveying and update them throughout the design and implementation process
- Assist in managing schedules
- Assist managing construction, including, but not limited to: answering Requests for Information / Clarification, producing site visit reports
- Manage construction supervision in the field, directly or through the supervision of other employees
- Prepare meeting and other reports to communicate and summarize status of projects
- Interface with other partners or services providers
- Identify potential challenges or problems, coordinate technical solutions, and facilitate solutions involving partner organizations or outside service providers
- Any other tasks assigned by the Program Manager or Project Manager Qualifications:
- Significant design and construction experience in structural engineering
- Degree in structural engineering from a recognized university, Masters is preferred
- Familiarity with international building code standards (i.e. Eurocode, IBC)
- Mastery of the following applications: o AutoCAD o MS Office or OpenOffice o Leading structural calculation software
- Able to clearly communicate ideas ranging from the abstract (concepts) to the particular (details and changes in the field)
- Languages: mastery of English; working command of Creole and French desired
- Demonstrated acute attention to detail within its larger “big-picture” context
- Ability to communicate and report efficiently
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage several projects simultaneously
- Proactive in identifying potential issues and developing solutions
- Clear and concise communicator
- Must have a sense of humor
