Action Area : Biodiversity and Conservation Management (BCM)
Programme: Environmental Change and Ecosystem Services (ECES)
Background
The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is a regional intergovernmental learning and knowledge sharing centre serving the eight regional member countries of the Hindu Kush Himalayas (HKH) – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan. Mountains are one of the important global ecosystems facing the most rapid socioeconomic and environmental changes. Our aim is to influence policy and practices to meet the associated and emerging challenges in the HKH region. To do this we bring together top researchers from the region and around the globe to generate and disseminate state-of-the-art scientific (physical and social) and traditional knowledge for evidence-based decision making; and we provide a neutral meeting platform for transboundary research, knowledge sharing and collaboration. Working across three main programme areas – integrated water and hazard management; environmental change and ecosystem services; and sustainable livelihoods and poverty reduction and supported by integrated knowledge management and geoinformatic tools – we seek to improve the lives and livelihoods of mountain women and men, now and for the future.
ICIMOD has been promoting transboundary biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in the HKH through adoption of a landscape approach to ecosystem management. The Kailash Sacred Landscape (KSL) has been identified as a critical transboundary region requiring conservation and improved management of its biodiversity and natural resources in order to maintain vital ecosystem services. The Kailash Sacred Landscape Conservation Initiative (KSLCI) encourages regional cooperation, community-based activities, and national and local participation and ownership to address the challenges of global climate warming and other environmental changes in this region. Similarly, the KSLCI sees to promote, facilitate, and build capacity for sustainable and environmentally sound approaches for development and for improving livelihoods, for example through tourism and alternative livelihood options.
The KSLCI is envisioned as a long-term conservation initiative and has been designed according to a programme cycle of phased implementation according to a long-term vision based on participatory approaches and an improved regional knowledge base. A preparatory phase has been completed, which laid the groundwork and created the policy enabling environment for regional cooperation and further implementation. The current three-year implementation phase, from February 2012 to January 2014, will commence with the development of the regional and national implementation framework and the preparation of work plans for full-scale implementation of the initiative.
