Background
VSO is the world’s leading independent international development organization that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries. VSO has been working in Tanzania since 1961. Our volunteers (approximately 80 international volunteers at any one time) work on both the mainland and the islands of Zanzibar. Our work focuses on education, health and secures livelihoods. We also deliver gender, disability mainstreaming and support the development of local volunteerism movements. We deliver change through applying a programmatic people to people approach at community, district, regional and policy level to support improved quality of services, wealth creation, organizational capacity development, learning and advocacy.
Purpose of post:
You will work with the Education Programme team to develop and manage our work in improving learning results for upper primary and lower secondary students in Tanzania, supporting volunteers in Zanzibar, Kagera, Kiteto and Mtwara.
Your key duties will include, developing placements, supporting recruitment and providing volunteers with professional, contextual and mentoring support. It is anticipated that you will work closely with the finance team to ensure that budgets are dispersed, monitored and accounted for effectively and take a lead role in monitoring placement and partnerships and sharing good practice.
Key Duties:

1. Programme Work.
1. Prepare volunteers placement documents
2. Work closely with Volunteer Programme Advisers at the Recruitment Bases to recruit volunteers
3. Participate in volunteer orientation, training and other activities as required.
4. Lead placement and partnership reviews (at least two visits per year to each region where VSO works)
5. Provide volunteers with professional, contextual and mentoring support.
6. Work with the finance team to ensure that budgets are dispersed, monitored and accounted for effectively.
7. As appropriate, identify funding opportunities and write funding proposals
8. As appropriate, manage specific projects
9. Network with a variety of stakeholders at national and local level to promote the work of VSO and actively participate and input into external and internal meetings
10. Ensure that success stories, good practice and project briefs are documented and shared internally and externally.
11. Contribute to VSO global initiatives and campaigns.
12. Liaise with other members of the VSO programme team to ensure VSO’s holistic approach and coordination
2. General duties:
13. Take appropriate action to ensure volunteers’ safety at all times and especially in times of civil, military or natural disturbances
14. Take a lead in emergencies as required.
15. As and when required manage cover for colleagues and take on additional duties as instructed by your line manager or CD.
16. Participate in supervision meetings, annual appraisals and staff development meetings.
