Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Office of the President, Residual Mechanism, Arusha Branch. The incumbent will work under the guidance of the President and will report to the Chef de Cabinet.
Responsibilities
Under the guidance of the President and the Chef de Cabinet, the Legal Officer, at the branch of the Mechanism where the President is not located, is responsible for providing legal support with respect to the mandated residual functions, including reviewing motions and requests, analyzing relevant law, rules and policies, and advising the President of the issues and applicable law. The incumbent will further support the President by assisting with the direction and management of the Chambers of the branch where the President is not located, including coordinating with ICTR, ICTY and the staff of the Mechanism at that location. Supervises the staff of the Mechanism assigned to the Office of the President at that location.

Education
Advanced university degree in law, preferably with specialization in international, criminal or humanitarian law. A first level university degree in law in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
Work Experience
Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible professional legal experience, at either the national or international level, including with an emphasis in criminal law, international law or humanitarian law. Previous experience in one of the two ad hoc Tribunals is highly desirable. Knowledge of the judicial, prosecutorial and administrative processes of the ad hoc Tribunals is highly desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the Tribunal. Fluency in written and spoken English or French is required, and working knowledge of the other is highly desirable.
Assessment Method
There will be a technical test and competency-based interview.
Special Notice
The appointment is limited to the Residual Mechanism. Appointment of the successful candidate on this position will be limited to the initial funding of the post. Extension of the appointment is subject to the extension of the mandate and/or the availability of funds. As the international tribunals are not integrated in the Secretariat, UN Staff Members serve on assignment or secondment from their parent department/office if selected. Appointments of staff members in the United Nations are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General. Staff Members are expected to move periodically to new functions in accordance with established rules and procedures, and may in this context be reassigned by the Secretary-General throughout the Organization based on the changing needs and mandates.
