The primary purpose of the Engineer Geologist is to provide advice to the mining department through the collation, analysis and reporting of geological data, predominantly in the areas of geological modelling and mapping.
Key Objectives
Safety
- Understand and comply with all relevant legislative and Rio Tinto HSE requirements.
- Demonstrate commitment to HSE through personal example.
- Promote a proactive safety culture by leading risk assessment and JSA's for new tasks and projects
- Prepare and maintain an annual Personal HSE Plan.
Technical Advice and Support
- Assist Senior and Principal Geotechnical Engineer's geotechnical database upkeep
- Fault identification and extrapolation (wall mapping and borehole drilling)
- Monitoring data collection and analysis
- Geotechnical sample collection and preparation or lab testing.
- Management and supervision of Geotechnicians and other field assistants
- Contribute to the collation of geological geotechnical and hydrogeological data and reports to assist with daily mine geological services.
- Undertake mine mapping and interpretation activities - assess mine conditions and problems at regular intervals and as requested, prepare maps showing possible issues and make recommendations to address problems.
- Ensure all data is entered into the appropriate databases in a timely and accurate manner. Maintain and update databases regularly
- Generate accurate geological and geotechnical and hydrogeological models for primary operational areas. Assist in resource estimation work and associated planning
- Work closely with other members of the Technical Services team to make the best use of shared resources and to ensure an integrated approach to all geological work
- Oversee the preparation of accurate and timely documentation as required to support operations.
- Assist with other Geological process improvement projects as required
Minimum Requirements
- Require a BSc majoring in Geology
- Must Have 3-4 years experience as a geologist ideally within a Coal Operation.
- Mozambican nationals will be given preference
- Experience in establishing and maintaining databases for geological purposes.
