BACKGROUND
World Heritage is one of IUCN’s flagship programmes and also one of its key and potentially high-profile communications areas. IUCN has played a key role in the UNESCO World Heritage Convention as the Advisory Body for natural and mixed sites for the last four decades. The Convention aims to protect the world’s remaining natural and cultural places of Outstanding Universal Value to humanity as a whole, including iconic sites like the Galapagos Islands, the Serengeti, and the Great Barrier Reef.
Based at IUCN’s headquarters in Gland, Switzerland, the Marketing and Communications Officer will lead the development and implementation of the World Heritage Programme’s communications strategy. This includes external and internal communications, enhancing awareness of IUCN’s role in safeguarding natural World Heritage sites, development of key marketing and communications approaches and tools, including for key projects such as ‘The IUCN World Heritage Agenda for Nature’ funded by the MAVA Foundation, and forthcoming knowledge products, such as the ‘Natural World Heritage Report’. This is a challenging position that requires innovative thinking to identify opportunities and provide direction to the programme’s marketing and communications activities.
This is a new position funded in partnership with the MAVA Foundation. It will start on 1 February 2012 or sooner if possible and is initially for one year, with the possibility of extension. Applications are encouraged from locally-based candidates with an existing work permit for Switzerland, or Swiss or EU nationality.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Develop a marketing and communications strategy in collaboration with IUCN’s regional World Heritage focal points, the Global Protected Areas Programme communications team, IUCN’s Global Communications team and other relevant stakeholders. The strategy should:
• Identify primary target groups/audiences
• Develop communications concepts/ key messages for these target groups
• Identify appropriate communications channels (e.g. web platforms, brochures, reports, newsletter etc.)
2. Coordinate the implementation of the marketing and communications strategy in collaboration with key partners. Activities include:
• Development of a communications campaign to enhance awareness of IUCN’s role in safeguarding natural World Heritage sites among target audiences. This campaign would focus on the ‘IUCN World Heritage Agenda for Nature Project’ and its outputs, e.g. the forthcoming ‘State of Natural World Heritage Report’, and would include partnership management, content management, and promotion.
• Coordination of communications for international events, including the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention, the annual World Heritage Committee meetings (June-July 2012, St Petersburg, Russia), the IUCN World Conservation Congress (September 2012, Jeju, Korea), and the World Parks Congress (2014). This will include involvement in determining and communicating policy positions on relevant topics.
• Relationship management with key partners regarding communications.
3. Other duties, related to the implementation of the annual World Heritage contracts and overall work of the programme, as discussed and agreed with the line manager.
REQUIREMENTS
• At least a first degree in a communications/marketing-related field.
• 5 years' relevant experience in communications/marketing.
• Demonstrated success in managing communications campaigns, including supervision of print, web etc.
• Excellent writing, presentation and organization skills.
• Excellent diplomatic and networking skills.
• Skills in and knowledge of online media.
• Fluency in English. Fluency in French highly desirable, with fluency in other languages, notably Spanish, an advantage.
• An ability to work and communicate effectively with a broad spectrum of individuals (scientists, journalists, government representatives, donors, staff) within a wide range of cultural environments.
• Ability to work well both independently and as a member of a team.
• Willingness to travel and to have a flexible working schedule, particularly during annual World Heritage Committee meetings and the 2012 World Conservation Congress.
• Specific knowledge and support for nature conservation an advantage.
SALARY
The gross annual salary for this position is in the range from CHF 40'320 to CHF 50'400, subject to deductions for social security contributions and second-pillar pension, and before tax.
