Practical Action is an international NGO working to alleviate poverty through the development and use of appropriate technologies by communities. Practical Action works closely with some of the world’s poorest people using simple technology to fight poverty and transform their lives for the better.
Practical Action is seeking a Country Director to develop its programmes and explore new opportunities in Sudan. Based in Khartoum, you will report to the International Director in the UK and will be a member of Practical Action’s international management team, sharing responsibility for developing PA’s international strategies and policies.
This is an exceptional job, requiring an exceptional individual. You will lead Practical Action’s work in Sudan, driving change, supporting innovative programmes on the ground, complemented by a commitment to generating and sharing knowledge through a range of approaches including campaigning, a development information service and subsidiary consulting company.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced, thoughtful and influential development leader. You will be a strategic thinker and team builder, able to delegate, be flexible, and add substantial value to Practical Action’s programme in Sudan.
You will need to have a track record in leading highly motivated, creative and diverse multi-disciplinary teams and proven sound financial management experience. You will also need to demonstrate a broad knowledge of international development issues and advocacy, as well as detailed understanding of Sudan.
Candidates should hold a degree in a relevant technology, social science or information discipline. A post-graduate degree in a relevant subject would be an advantage. You must have at least ten years’ relevant work experience in INGOs, some at senior management level.
Practical Action always recruits national staff for Country Director posts, so candidates should be Sudanese or of Sudanese origin. Fluency in written and spoken English and Arabic is required.
A competitive remuneration package will be offered to the successful candidate initially for a 5-year period. This is renewable at the end of each term based on performance.
