Senior Statistician - World Bank Tanzania Office

AFTP2 on behalf of the World Bank and other development partners in Tanzania is currently seeking a senior statistician to be based in the World Bank’s Tanzania Country Office with the main task of engaging the Government of Tanzania in the overall policy dialogue in the statistics sector, overseeing the implementation of the Tanzania Statistical Master Plan (TSMP), coordinating donor activities in the sector; and supporting the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in the day-to-day planning, coordination, execution and monitoring of statistical activities.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) of Tanzania in collaboration with other Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) has embarked on a comprehensive reform program of the statistical sector with the assistance and funding from the Government of Tanzania, the World Bank and other development partners. The program is implemented under the Tanzania Statistical Master Plan (TSMP 2009-2014) and aims at developing the National Statistical System (NSS) through a range of initiatives within, institutional reform, human resource and capacity development, development of statistical infrastructure, data development and dissemination as well as physical infrastructure and equipments.

In order to achieve this objective, Development Partners (DP), including the World Bank, the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), have agreed to support NBS through a basket fund arrangement. The World Bank will be the largest donor to the Basket Fund through an IDA loan of $30 million.

The World Bank’s revised Africa Regional strategy for IDA support to African development focuses on four major pillars: (a) increasing growth and enhancing competitiveness; (b) investing in people; (c) improving governance and reducing conflict; and (d) implementing the emerging partnership model. The Africa Region of the World Bank covers 47 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Over 1,400 staff work in the Region; and more than 50 percent are based in the 37 country offices. The Africa Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Group (AFR PREM) plays a key role in implementing the Africa strategy. It has particularly significant responsibilities in strengthening efforts to: deepen results orientation; build sustainable and effective institutions; and strengthen shared growth strategies. The Senior Statistician would be part of AFTP2 sector unit, the home of PREM staff providing lending and non-lending services in support of growth and poverty reduction in East Africa and the Horn.
