Description of duties: Purpose of the Post: To provide support to the Regional Adviser (Nutrition) through regular technical interactions with the Member States and assist in the design of WHO technical guidelines, strategies and policy positions on nutrition issues to all Member States and Partner organizations. Organizational Context: Under the overall supervision of the Director, Division of Health Protection & Promotion, and the direct supervision of the Regional Adviser (Nutrition), the incumbent will implement the assigned duties in a coordinated manner and against agreed programmatic and performance indicators Summary of Assigned Duties: - To assist in providing technical support to Member States for the introduction and adoption of the WHO new growth standards and activities related to the global strategy on infant and young child feeding with focus on growth monitoring. - To assist in providing technical support to Member States on the area of nutrition assessments, surveys, and related statistics and reporting. - To assist in providing technical support to Member States in designing field nutritional activities. - To assist in providing technical support to Member States in the field of total diet studies. - To assist in developing database, and monitoring the nutrition indicators in the region. - To help in organizing intercountry and national workshops, technical consultations and meetings and in the preparation of appropriate reports and manuals. Main achievements include: Assist the Regional Adviser (Nutrition) in coordinating with Member States and other partner organizations in the adoption of the Regional Nutrition Strategy and the new WHO growth standards; assist in nutrition assessment survey and evaluations, designing and monitoring technical progress in the development of the regional and national food-based dietary guidelines; coordinating the work plans of relevant activities; preparation of relevant documents and reports; ensuring general effectiveness and timeliness of nutrition programme activities. | |
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS | |
Education: Essential: - University Degree in Medicine, with specializations in public health or nutrition or applied human nutrition. Desirable: - Advanced training in dietary assessments and food analysis/ nutrition surveys and assessments. | |
Skills: WHO Competencies: 1- Producing results. 2- Communicating in a credible and effective way. 3- Knowing and managing yourself. 4- Ensuring effective use of resources. 5- Respecting and promoting individual and cultural differences. Functional Skills and knowledge: - In depth knowledge and understanding of the food and nutrition issues; - Identification of the constraints and opportunities in the introduction of new and innovative food and nutrition intervention strategies and actions; - Ability to function effectively in a team setting within a cross-cultural environment; - Proven skills in conducting nutrition surveys including data collection, analysis and interpretation; Other Skills (e.g. IT): - Good working knowledge of personal computer and familiarity with Microsoft Office, SPSS and Epilnfo software. Ability to conduct data and literature search through the internet. | |
Experience: Essential: - At least 2 years experience in public health nutrition, including experience in conducting research in food and nutritional sciences. | |
Languages: Excellent knowledge of English and Arabic. | |
