Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Modeling the role of preceptor for nursing and midwifery students in their area of clinical expertise

Serving as part of the professional development team at the clinical teaching sites, including hospitals

Providing continuing education to the existing nursing and midwifery staff

Working closely with the physician mentors to foster integrated education of medical, nursing, and midwifery students and medical residents

Serving as a resource for FNS and the five schools, providing lectures, faculty development programs, and advice on curriculum development in their specialty areas

Specialty areas include:

Adult nursing - including general adult care, critical care, trauma and surgery, infectious diseases, and chronic disease management

Pediatrics - including general pediatric care, neo-natal intensive care, and pediatric infectious diseases

Mental Health Nursing - including expertise in post-traumatic stress disorder and pediatric and adolescent mental health issues

Midwifery - including pre-natal care, family planning, emergency obstetrical care, and prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV

Public health and community nursing

The education/experience requirements for the clinical mentor position include:

At least three years of experience in a clinical specialty

Ability and willingness to teach students at all levels, from fundamentals to advanced nursing practice

Experience adapting to resource limitations while maintaining high quality care

Proven track record as a leader and expert clinician

Former position that included mentoring/precepting students

Other qualifications:

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Management style that is inclusive and collaborative

Willingness to live in Rwanda for a minimum of 11 months

Respect for the experience and expertise of Rwandan colleagues

Commitment to the goals of the Rwanda Ministry of Health and Rwandan nursing leadership as it relates to strengthening of nursing and midwifery education

French or Kinyarwanda language skills preferred but not required
