Position Title: JUDICIAL RESEARCH CLERKS 1. Core mission of Position: The Judicial Research Clerks will assist Judges of the Supreme Court as well as the High Court Chamber for International Crimes with administrative and legal tasks, freeing Judges of these so that they can concentrate onto aspects of judging. 2. Service Agency: The Judiciary 3. Specific tasks: a. Conducting legal research; b. Preparing memoranda (including bench memos, which appellate judges use during oral argument); c. Preparing draft orders and opinions; d. Proofreading the judges’ orders and opinions; and e. Verifying citations. f. Law clerks may also perform administrative duties, such as maintaining the chambers library, assembling documents, and even swearing in witnesses and marking exhibits. g. Organizing the judge’s calendar; h. Making travel arrangements; i. Coordinating judicial committee activities; j. Screening pleadings and other documents submitted to the court to ensure that they comply with legal requirements and court rules; k. Maintaining office records and files; l. Performing the other numerous tasks that keep the chambers running smoothly. m. The law clerks and judicial assistant may also deal with lawyers and members of the public on behalf of the judge. 4. Qualifications and Experience : a. Advanced university degree in law, with significant academic background in public international law or professional experience in the field. b. A first level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of advanced university degree year. 7 c. Post-graduate studies in public international law would be an asset; d. Two years' experience in the settlement of international legal dispute with an international organization, government, law firm or other private sector entity would be desirable.
