University of Cambridge -Department of Pathology
(Part Time, Fixed Term)
Salary: £26,264-£30,424 pro rata
Reference: PK01833
Closing date: 31 October 2013
We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a degree in biological sciences who can provide coordination, organisational and administrative support for the Cambridge component of an Africa research capacity building programme called THRiVE (Training Health Researchers into Vocational Excellence in East Africa). The five year THRiVE Programme, funded by the Wellcome Trust, was initiated in 2009. There are nine partners involved: seven universities and research institutes from East Africa (in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda), and two from the UK (including the University of Cambridge).
A previous role-holder worked with the Coordinators in the African partner institutions and the Programme Steering Committee in Cambridge to identify and match Cambridge mentors with competitively-selected African fellows. The African researchers who were offered two- or four-year THRiVE fellowships were then given the opportunity to visit the University of Cambridge for periods of up to 12 months during their fellowships, to attend courses and develop/complete their research projects. These visits to Cambridge are on-going. Cambridge mentors and African supervisors also make reciprocal visits during the fellowship. The person appointed to the role for the remaining year of the THRiVE Programme will therefore be expected to coordinate existing fellows' visits to Cambridge, and organise the personal and professional training to be provided to fellows when they visit Cambridge. (S)he will also support the fellows' African supervisors and Cambridge mentors involved in the research collaborations, whether they are based in Africa or visiting Cambridge. Furthermore, there will be the need to continue to recruit, interact with and support other Cambridge researchers from a range of health-related disciplines who are interested in mentoring/collaborating with African researchers.
It is worth noting that the THRiVE Programme is part of the multi-disciplinary Cambridge-Africa Programme at the University of Cambridge, and hence the THRiVE Coordinator will work as a member of the Cambridge-Africa Programme team which is based at the Department of Pathology. (S)he will be expected to connect with other Coordinators of Cambridge-Africa Programme initiatives, and be involved in the organisation of University-wide Cambridge-Africa activities and events. (S)he will also provide support to the Manager and Director of the Cambridge-Africa Programme, as well as members of the Cambridge-Africa Steering Committee.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 1 year in the first instance.
Working pattern: part-time (50%). Working hours will be agreed prior to appointment.
Interviews will take place on Monday 18th November 2013.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
The application form (CHRIS/6) is available to download from http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/hr/forms/chris6/. The completed CHRIS/6 and a copy of your CV should be emailed to jobs@path.cam.ac.uk or posted to Reception, Department of Pathology, Tennis Court Road, Cambridge, CB2 1QP.
