Director - Strategic Business Initiatives
Reporting to, and working closely with, the President and CEO, the Director for Strategic Business Initiatives will coordinate cross-cutting strategic business initiatives across the Bank. He/she will take accountability for advancing specific strategic projects, in particular special purpose funds and facilities. He/she will serve as a senior member of the management team, and serve in various committees with cross-cutting duties across the Bank.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Establish a team of specialists to advance various strategic business initiatives, with a focus on special purpose funds and facilities, and provide direction to ensure they execute action plans;
- Bring together Bank wide virtual teams from time to time to facilitate effective coordination of strategic undertakings involving different departments;
- Assist the President, Directors and Heads to implement new strategic thrusts in the established business areas of the Bank, and in this regard, participate in quarterly reviews to monitor and evaluate implementation of business strategies, thrusts and priorities, and make recommendations for improvement;
- Assist the President in the strategic repositioning of the Bank in line with the new Corporate Plan;
- Review and strengthen business processes and systems across the Bank to deepen efficiency, effectiveness and accountability in the Bank’s operations, to enable scaled operations in new business areas and to strengthen the Bank’s key functions in the context of decentralized operations;
- Undertake periodic assessments of progress on specific strategic issues which span departments and advise the President accordingly;
- Provide the President with relevant reports for decision making purposes;
- Lead the preparation of strategic initiative documents, and related reports, memos, letters and presentations;
- Serve in and assist in-chairing relevant Committees as and when required;
- Undertake other tasks as assigned by the President and CEO from time to time.
PROFILE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of 15 years of diversified international experience in banking and finance, including development finance and investment funds;
- Minimum of 5 years cross-cutting management experience in the areas of corporate management and business operations;
- Minimum 5 years regional and/or international multilateral institution experience, involving the management of complexity across countries, sovereigns, the public-private nexus and the establishment/operationalization of international funds at a strategic and management level;
- In depth operational experience in eastern and southern Africa, ideally with substantive on the ground experience in multiple countries;
- Knowledge of development finance; project and corporate finance, including credit analysis and evaluation skills;
- Exceptional writing skills; concept documents, reports (including analytical), memos, letters, presentations, etc (at different levels – Board, Management, Staff and other key Stakeholders);
- Financial and analytical skills;
- Experience in strategy formulation and execution;
- Experience in institution building;
- Strong business acumen;
- Direct experience in project and corporate finance, including credit and valuation skills to enable informed interaction with Executives, Managers and Senior Staff and Fund Managers;
- Strong and demonstrated leadership skills to manage a diversified team of managers and specialists Understands policy compliance and best practice;
- Strategic thinker: Develops Long-Term Objectives, Strategies, Goals Orients to longer terms than day-to-day activities; determines long-term issues, problems or opportunities;
- Able to communicate complex concepts effectively to executive management, board, shareholder and staff;
- Ability to advise on broad scale, longer-term objectives, goals, or projects affecting the Organization as a whole;
- Works with a long-term perspective in addressing on-going customer needs and problems;
- Acts as a trusted advisor and becomes involved in the Bank’s decision-making process;
- Is innovative and agile in response to internal and external change;
- Generates and maintains a creative and conducive working environment for staff;
- Demonstrates leadership at organisational and stakeholder level. Sets an example and is a role model.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A Masters degree with specialization in the area of banking and investments, from a reputable tertiary institution;
- Specialized and practical training in the areas of investment/finance and strategic management/strategic research is an added advantage.
