GOAL first started working in South Sudan in the mid 1980, originally through short term emergency intervention.
GOAL South Sudan currently has 4 programme sites Twic County in Warrap State, Agok in Abyei Administrative Area, the Sobat Corridor in Upper Nile State and Maban also in Upper Nile State.
At these sites GOAL South Sudan operates public health programmes. Activities include curative primary health care, based on the management of 23 primary health clinics; preventative health care including HIV/AIDS messaging, malaria control and hygiene promotion; nutrition and food security, WASH, Livelihoods and clinic construction/rehabilitation.
GOAL are Lead WASH Agency in Batil camp, which has a population of approximately 35,000 refugees from Upper Nile State. WASH activities are focused on distribution of drinking water and construction of semi-permanent latrines.
General Description of the Role
The WASH Volunteers will be responsible for supporting the WASH programme in the construction of a permanent water distribution system in Batil and expansion of the sanitation programme. S/he will report to the WASH Manager and who will allocate roles and responsibilities as required.
The role will be exciting and dynamic, requiring the WASH volunteers to be flexible in approach and to work independently with the camp community to improve access to water and sanitation.
Key Duties
- Take responsibility for activities as directed by the WASH management in improving water supply or access to sanitation.
- Water Supply Activities as required:
- Managing WASH assistants and local labour in the construction of emergency distribution systems, including running pipelines, installing tapstands, providing drainage at tapstands, inspecting and repairing existing pipelines, training tapstand attendants, etc.
- Provide support for the management of the water trucking operation to improve delivery and quality of the service
- Be involved in the mapping of the camp for a permanent distribution system,
- Provide design solutions as required for the permanent water distribution system,
- Support drilling operations,
- Manage WASH assistants and local labour in the construction of permanent pipelines
- Sanitation Activities
- Support the construction of semi-permanent latrines to meet coverage requirements in the camp
- Help improve the design and siting of the semi-permanent latrines to promote safe sanitation
- Support mapping activities to develop a comprehensive understanding of the camp environment and delivery of WASH services against the minimum SPHERE Standards.
- Support WASH activities as guided by the WASH Co-ordinator and WASH Manager
Person Specification
- Degree in Civil/Water/Environmental engineering or similar related subject
- Demonstrated analytical and conceptual skills to plan and implement work to meet tight deadlines, considering financial and logistical implications
- Ability to work effectively with limited resources or support.
- Excellent computer skills. Competence with the following highy desirable: Google Earth or other open GIS systems, Autocad, and Excel.
- Good inter-personnel skills
- Fluent in spoken and written English
- Report/proposal writing skills
- Ability and willingness to work in remote areas under challenging circumstances.
- Outgoing personality with excellent communication skills.
