SolidarMed is an established yet innovative Swiss NGO focussing on health in Africa. The aim of our work is to ensure that the Right to Health can be exercised by everyone, including those in the poorest countries in Africa, and that health becomes an effective, sustainable factor of development.
Since January 2009, SolidarMed has been involved in the training of “Medical Licentiates” (MLs) in Zambia. This programme is a response to the shortage of medical personnel - esp. Doctors - in rural hospitals.
The ML-Programme at Chainama College in Lusaka offers post-graduate training for qualified Clinical Officers. In different decentralised training hospitals, trainees receive in-depth specialist instruction in the areas of Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, Gynaecology/Obstetrics and Surgery. Graduates of this programme should be able to offer first-line medical care, including diagnosis and treatment, as well as be able to manage district health centres/hospitals.
