The Committee to Protect Journalists seeks a senior manager and advocate to consolidate and expand its Internet Advocacy program. The successful candidate will be passionate and knowledgeable about the issues confronting journalists and bloggers will be familiar with the technologies and public policies that impact online writing and reporting, will anticipate trends and identify threats to freedom of expression and privacy online.
CPJ established its Internet program three years ago and it has since become an integral part of its defense of journalists worldwide. This is an exciting opportunity for an innovative individual to strengthen the program and lead public advocacy on behalf of online writers in multiple media and forums.
CPJ is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to the defense of press freedom around the world. CPJ operates globally with a staff of 29 in New York and with representatives in key international locations.
Primary duties and responsibilities:
- Advocate globally for government policies and reforms that facilitate the gathering and dissemination of news and opinion online by writing for CPJ and other publications on Internet issues, by organizing campaigns, public events, and workshops worldwide highlighting Internet issues with governments and international bodies.
- Build a research team and advocacy capacity.
- Advocate for Internet freedom-friendly policies and practices among companies that provide services and equipment used by online writers to ensure their privacy and security.
Skills:
- Ability to write clearly and quickly on complex issues for both specialist and general audiences.
- Good public speaking and presentation skills.
- Understanding of the technology behind online journalism.
- Knowledge of the legislative and regulatory framework in the ICT industry.
- Ability to manage and motivate a team of researchers and advocates.
Qualifications:
- Graduate degree or equivalent
Experience:
- A background in online advocacy or journalism is desirable.
- International work or study experience, and foreign languages skills are an advantage.
