WaterAid is seeking two exceptional individuals to lead our work in the African Continent.
- Deadline : 4 Nov 2016
Extreme poverty cannot be eradicated without universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene: everyone on our planet needs these basics to be able to live healthy, productive lives. We are an independent, global organisation with a single focus on water, sanitation and hygiene for the poorest and most marginalised people. We work with partners and influence decision-makers to maximise our impact.
We are currently seeking two exceptional individuals to lead our work in the African Continent. Both will report to the Director of International Programmes and these roles are undertaken in line with WaterAid’s values, guiding principles and global strategy.
Our work at the country level is critical to achieving our ambitious Global Strategy, with a vision of everyone everywhere having access to safe water and sanitation by 2030. As such, theRegional Director, East Africa provides leadership to the region and also contributes to the global leadership of WaterAid as a whole, ensuring our goals are achieved by developing and implementing the regional strategy, empowering and developing our 100 staff across Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda, and influencing key stakeholders on the impact that improvements to safe water and improved sanitation and hygiene can make to the poorest and most excluded. Building on our success in the region to date, the Regional Director, East Africa will work alongside communities and partner organisations from government, civil society, the UN, academia and the private sector in order to strengthen our work on the ground both in terms of delivery and ensuring communities are fully engaged in championing their rights.
The Head of Pan Africa Programme is a completely new role, presenting an exciting opportunity to shape the objectives of the Pan-Africa strategy to match the ambition of the global strategy and expand WaterAid’s profile in policy and practice in Africa. Our aim is to place WASH at the heart of the African development agenda and the Pan-Africa strategy will be an important contributor to achieving the WaterAid global strategy which has the goal of everyone, everywhere having access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene. The Head of Pan Africa Program will contribute to the global leadership of WaterAid by providing strategic direction and guidance as well as being an ambassador for our organisation. The primary purpose of the role will be to influence key stakeholders on the impact that improvements to safe water and improved sanitation and hygiene can make to the poorest and most excluded in the African continent.
Both roles require individuals who will bring extensive strategic management and leadership experience as well as political nous and a sound understanding of current global trends impacting the work of international NGOs as well as the relevant context in the region. The right candidates will bring substantial experience of working at a senior level in development in Africa, as well as a track record of building and leading high performing and diverse teams, with skills in cross cultural management. Most importantly, the successful candidates will be committed to WaterAid’s values and bring a working and leadership style that reflects these.
Additionally, the Head of Pan Africa Programme requires an individual with substantial knowledge of, and a successful track record of influencing, Pan African institutions such as the AUC, AfDB, ACHPR and other relevant institutions that affect WASH and development in Africa.
The Head of Pan Africa Programme role may be based in Abuja, Nigeria, or Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Regional Director, East Africa may be based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; or Kampala, Uganda; or Kigali, Rwanda; or Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. There is the potential for either role to also be based in London.
