Unilever Tea Tanzania Limited is a plantation company operating under Unilever Tea, East Africa (UTEA). UTTL employs over 5,500 employees whose safety and security are very important to the business.

We are currently looking to hire Safety Officer, for our Tanzania business. This role will be both office and field based and requires candidates with knowledge for the job. If you are looking for a career in Unilever then you are the person we are looking for.

JOB TITLE: Safety Officer (1 posts)

REPORTS TO: Security and Safety Manager

JOB LOCATION: Mufindi

Business Context and Main Purpose of the Job

Applying Unilever management systems for safety at all stages in the extended Supply Chain covering promoting Safety at Work, resolving safety issues and incidents and doing risk assessment and improving processes, systems and procedures.

Main Accountabilities

1. Co-ordinates Unilever SHE framework standards including the company’s compliance

2. Provides training in regards to safety protocols, procedures and safety rules

3. Guides behavioural based safety programme to assure risk behaviours and risk conditions are addressed


4. Guides units and departments to Occupational Safety and Health Act 2003 compliance as it is applicable in Tanzania

5. Guides investigation of serious occurrences in nature, including preparation of material and evidence for organisation use. Makes studies and analyses of industrial accidents and road traffic incidents causes and hazards to health for use by company personnel and outside agencies.

6. Inspects and tours company facilities to deter and detect existing potential accident, health hazards, their threats, and recommends corrective or preventive measures where applicable

7. Co-ordinates implementation of sites’ emergency response plans, including fire drills, evacuations and periodic testing of crisis emergency procedures.

8. Implementation and Compliance on Unilever’s Safe working at heights standard; safe Travel in vehicle standard; Electrical safety standard; Machinery Guarding standard; Workplace Noise standard; Critical Pressure Equipment standard; Hazardous substance standard; General Engineering for manufacturing sites standard.

9. Keeps managers and employees alerted as to the hazards of working with dangerous chemicals and any hazardous substances

10. Participates in the development of the annual site SHE budget and controls expenditures and procedure manual consistent to Unilever standards

11. Carries other duties as may be assigned by Line Manager

12. Foresees contractor management programme and assists managers on necessary tools

KEY INTERFACES

• SHE Manager; Assistant SHE Manager; Environmental Officer (SHE); All SHE coordinators in units & departments

• Other management staffs in units and departments

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE

• Implementing OSHE Framework and Specific Standards

• Measuring and communicating SHE performance

• Ensuring compliance with local regulatory requirements

• Graduate in Engineering (preferred)

• 2 - 5 Years experience as Safety Officer

• Training on Tanzania OSHA courses
