One Acre Fund is a rapidly-growing organization, and increasingly needs structural expansion to meet this growth. We are looking for someone to develop and coordinate multiple construction projects to accommodate this organizational growth, including central and regional offices and residential houses in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Burundi. We are looking for someone to take control of and own the entire construction process from start to finish via strong leadership of large construction teams located in several different countries.
This is an incredible opportunity to contribute significantly to East Africa's infrastructure by taking on a challenging management role, while enabling One Acre Fund to extend its impact more quickly. You will begin immediately as the department director and will be generally responsible for three to five major construction projects over the next two years in Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania. You will be in charge of a large and growing team of international and local staff and gathering all the necessary resources to complete the construction projects from start to finish, including Project Managers for each individual country projects.
- Construction: we are looking for someone to own the entire construction process for several large construction projects in Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania initially, with high potential for further construction projects later.
- Construction team expansion
- You will be responsible for growing and developing a large construction team of international and local construction managers, local contractors and laborers.
- We already have fantastic teams in Kenya and Rwanda - for example, we have a Stanford graduate in our team who recently completed an MA in Sustainable Construction and Design, with experience working on US embassy buildings in the Dominican Republic.
- You will be responsible for further building this team in all sites and gathering all the resources necessary for the completion of projects.
- Infrastructure projects
- You will be responsible for working with project managers on several large-scale construction projects in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Burundi. These projects are a combination of large central offices, smaller regional offices, and residential housing compounds.
- Via your project managers, you will be ultimately responsible for coordinating all phases of these project, including:
- Land scouting, purchase and transfer
- Planning and regulation documentation
- Interior and exterior design, landscaping
- Work and project planning
- Materials procurement, inventory management, quantity surveying
- Contractor management, quality control
- Finishings, design, logistics of resource transfer, etc.
- Budgeting and accounting
- Growth strategy and needs assessment
- You will be responsible for coordinating with 1AF stakeholders to help identify future infrastructure needs and potential projects, as well as upgrading and maintaining existing infrastructure.
- Long-term career growth and development
- We would very much like the successful candidate in this position to eventually be leading a large and permanent team of Construction Project Managers, plus a large group of various contractors.
- We will grow as an organization from 1,500 total staff to 4,000 total staff in the next three years, and 70 international staff to 150+. Rapid organization growth means rapid career growth, and we want to emphasize that there is real opportunity here for a key leadership role within One Acre Fund, rather than just a short/medium term job.
Qualifications
We are seeking exceptional professionals with 2 to 5+ years of solid construction work experience, and a demonstrated long-term passion for international development. Ideally, this candidate will have managed large-scale construction projects in the developing world. They will need to be able to coordinate several large-scale construction projects simultaneously via strong leadership of a large construction team.
We are looking for truly extraordinary candidates that will help take our organization to the next levels of impact and scale. This is a competitive posting for a career-track role with minimum initial commitment of 2 years. Candidates who fit the following criteria are strongly encouraged to apply:
- Strong construction management work experiences: Examples might include managing projects at a school, hospital, office or residential housing unit. The ideal candidate will have coordinated construction projects from the ground up in both the Western and developing worlds (although this is not a requirement), including building the necessary teams for that project.
- Top-performing academic background (please include GPA and test scores on your resume) in Construction Management, Structural Engineering or a similar degree.
- Humility and personal stability. We have a fantastic and likeable team. We are looking for passionate professionals that combine strong leadership skills with good humor, patience, and a humble approach to service.
- A willingness to commit to living in rural areas in East Africa for at least two years – this is a long-term, career-track role.
- Language: English required, Swahili and/or French nice-to-have
- Ability to cook/laugh – desirable.
Preferred Start Date: Immediate
Compensation: Starts modest. However, this is a career-track role with fast raises for performance, paying a meaningful salary for long-term placement in developing nations.
Benefits: Health insurance, immunizations, flight, room and board.
Career Development: Twice annual management consulting-style career reviews, and constant feedback. Your manager will invest significant time in your career development.
Sponsor International Candidates: Yes
